Spanish car rental and breakdown cover

I go to Spain frequently and always hire from Firefly via Last Minute without any problems. I have my own policy which covers their extra excess insurance, however this last time I rented I had to pay an extra 60+ euros for breakdown cover. When I questioned this I was told it was a newly introduced company policy. My own excess policy does not cover breakdown. Anyone had anything similar or any ideas of how to avoid this?

Was it mentioned on the car rental voucher from Last Minute?
If not, then they had no right to charge it and you just fell for the hard sell. You should have refused it.

You got off lightly. Google some of the many companies like GOLDCAR in Spain and you'll see almost half a million complaints of much more expensive (allegations of ) fraud, overcharging, fuelling, insurance and fake damage scams.
Like you, I have stand alone insurance and when I rented a car- last week from Helle Hollis in Malaga, not only was it incredibly cheap, clean, new and hassle free, but the very friendly and efficient staff didn't mention the con that you fell for.
So my advice would be to book direct, with a well-respected and well reviewed company- not via an intermediary. I've never been ripped off in 50+ rentals0
