Boiler ‘Grants’

Options
Hi,
Has anyone had experience of getting a new boiler via these government grants. Some information I’ve read suggests it’s not a thing anymore but some suggests it is.

I’m not even sure we’re eligible but wanted to see if anyone had experience before I gave any of the companies offering them my details.

Thanks in advance.

I looked at the these grants a few months back. First off, it is not a government scheme, rather, something that the energy suppliers have to do as part of their operating licence. Unfortunately, it is a limited pot of money so not everyone gets a "free" boiler. If you are on certain benefits, meet the eligibility criteria, and your current boiler is broken, then you may get some financial help. The best thing to do is to contact the big six energy suppliers direct and ask about their scheme - It should be on their web site.

I thought as much when I read between the lines. Of course, the companies don’t sell it that way, hence me asking first. Am I right in assuming that you need to be a customer of one of the participating energy companies too? It’s unlikely we will be as we’re with a little company.

    Thank you for you reply.

From what I understand, the schemes are open to anyone meeting the criteria even if you are not a customer. So a Zog-or-wot-ever customer can approach EDF or BG, and apply for a new boiler, no strings attached.

I'm unfortunately on universal credit , but I'm a homeowner . I applied to EDF as they have been my energy supplier for many years ( more fool me ).
I spoke to a horrible ,  blunt matter of fact woman from EDF who told me no. She also said that one person represents all companies in the eco scheme and I'll get the same answer .
I contacted eon . They sent someone around to survey my flat from another company. The guy did technical drawings , took photos etc .
I had proof of being on universal credit by showing my journal on my iPad , which he took a photo of . I haven't a mortgage on the flat but showed my service charges from the freeholder. This wasn't enough proof so I scanned the info from solicitor ( land registry etc) . I just mislaid it's when I needed it most .
It looks like o should be getting the grant . The cost would have been £240or there abouts. If I get the boiler , I was told it should be less than £500. I'm crossing my fingers , but it looks like the next call will be from eon arranging a date for a new boiler to be installed .
As for EDF , my blue plus contract will be expiring in a few weeks so they can go and do one . I'm thinking of going to eon if I get the grant , but you don't have to be with them to get a boiler grant . Hope this helps ..
having trouble with this new format 😾so if you are a homeowner and on universal credit , you should get it . There is a list on the eon eco website

Hello another_casualty and many thanks for contacting us about a gas boiler replacement.
It sounds like we're looking to help under the Affordable Warmth scheme. This is part of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) - a Government led energy saving scheme funded by the energy suppliers. As you say, this is open to both E.ON and non E.ON customers.
As the name suggests, the Affordable Warmth part is designed to make heating homes more affordable. As well as gas boiler replacements, Affordable Warmth includes help with cavity wall and loft insulation. To qualify for help, households need to be on certain benefits and either own their home or rent privately. There are more details on our website including a list of qualifying benefits.
Good luck with the grant another_casualty. Hope all turns out well for you.

  • Thanks for that Malc. I will update here as and when my installation is confirmed. If you miss it here, I will send you a  pm.  As I say, I've sent proof to the company that surveyed my home and they should have forwarded that to eon. I'm just not sure how long I have to wait for eon to get back to me after they have done their checks.
    Thanks 😼

  • Hello malc 😼
just thought I'd check for any updates on this new look website . I have an update
while on the bus this morning , I've just made a payment of £240! Fantastic news in my situation at the moment .
I'm just awaiting a call to arrange for date of installation . Hats off to yourselves for this . Once I have the new boiler , I will be terminating my contract with EDF at the earliest opportunity and will go with yourselves for the best fixed energy tariff should I be accepted . Please p m me if you like .
In a way it's best to leave this post here for others to see how easy it was for eon to organise a boiler grant when I need it .
Sorry to others reading this thinking it's a hi jacked thread , but it's a possible solution to anyone who needs one .
    Thanks 😼👍
  • I work in this industry and am very unhappy about how the scheme is set up. Eco currently only caters for high saving carbon properties which means that mosor all of the funding is directed at the largest properties only.
These properties especially detached do not have to pay anything towards their boiler and they can enjoy a boiler TOTALLY FREE. However people that live in Mid terraced houses and flats have to pay a contrbution upwards of £800 or they dont get a boiler.
Very unfair and discriminates against the poorest people in our society.
People on the breadline have to pay large contrbutions whilst those in large houses pay nothing! This scheme should be targeted at people in council tax band A & B only. I have seen large mansions in Bands F &G get a boiler completely free because they have someone claiming a benefit in the property!
It is a misuse of public funds and I would like everyone to be aware of this and hopefully Martin can investigate this so thet Everyone can enjot Eco measures and not only those who are licky enough to live in lrge carbon saving properties.
  • Hi all.
I need advice.  My boiler has broken down, Ive had gas People here this morning who have said they no longer make parts for my boiler. I've checked and boiler isn't covered on my home insurance. I work full time and my husband is about to become redundant at end of January. We don't claim any benefits but sadly due to previous marriage I do not have great credit. Can anyone suggest if I can get any help from anyone. I'm with EDF for my electric and gas supplies.
