Can’t assign number plate to car as DVLA “unavailable”

I phoned DVLA today & was told that the department was closed due to having no staff so I could not assign my plates

Probably not a great surprise - they're still on reduced staff, and working through the postal backlog from being totally closed for months, so they'll have put the people they have got onto higher priorities.

Do it online, they just aren't dealing with mail (and probably phone calls).  I assigned a number very quickly in April/May online.
