Can’t assign number plate to car as DVLA “unavailable”

We have been waiting for the V5 to arrive so we can put our private plates on our car, it arrived yesterday so ahead of the storm we fitted them (the car is on our driveway and we aren’t using it today as it’s ridiculously windy here and lots of trees are down)

However, we have been trying to assign the plates to the car since yesterday and the DVLA online application site for this is constantly unavailable!?  It’s meant to be open daily between 7am and 7pm but it wasn’t working yesterday and it’s not working today!

If it’s not working by tomorrow, we will need to switch the plates back over to drive the car.

Anyone know if it’s a common thing for the DVLA online portal to go “down” and how long it usually takes to work again?  As it’s the weekend, we cannot contact them but I cannot find any reason for it not to be working?

Also, we changed the plates as it’s suppose to take like 5 minutes to assign them and you then are meant to change them over pretty soon - didn’t anticipate for the sodding site not working!

I know not very helpful, but maybe try again later around 6pm.  If it doesn't work, try again the morning just after 7.

    Try tomorrow during business hours.

Perhaps changing the physical plates AFTER the transfer would have made more sense.

Well like I said, the service is meant to be online every day 7-7 and take five minutes to do.  Plus we couldn’t do them today as the weather is too bad and won’t have time tomorrow.

If the service was working like it should, it wouldn’t have been an issue
  • I had the same last year  had the  V5 come in the post with the new number,  so went online  to  assign it and had the same as you,  called dvla   and was told they have not updated there  web details  yet,    and to try in a few days time.

But the service isn't working. Why? No idea. But there we go. These things happen.

Nobody will die if you're forced to drive around without your vanity plate for another day or two.
  • Just been on the dvla web site thats working  fine,   when i go to asign a number  page   and click the green box  its says  service  unavailable,  try tomorrow  or give them a call.

    Clearly nobody will die.....

We only put it on as we had the time to do it yesterday and was told it was very straight forward to do online, if we have to take it off again it doesn’t matter, it’s just frustrating that the DVLA bit isn’t working when it should be.

I am not bothered about driving around without a “vanity plate” as you put it.
