Apple warranty

I had a genuine apple cable catch fire before Christmas, I called them to sort a replacement and they wanted it for inspection. I sent it to Ireland and now they have sent it over to the USA but say they have no time scale of when they will look into it. As it’s a safety issue they say they won’t refund or replace until they get round to checking it’s one of their cables and why it burned out. It’s been around 6 weeks now, what rights do I have towards getting a replacement in a reasonable time?

When did you purchase the cable ?.Who was the vendor .If you are claiming under Warranty then its down to the T&C as opposed to claiming on your Consumer Rights .

It was direct from Apple back in June. It was plugged into the wall and the lightning end was on the carpet burning away when I went to plug it into the iPad. Not the best thing to find on Xmas eve at the end of the kids bed as they were getting tucked in. I was hoping for some consumer rights/law which says they have a reasonable time scale to sort it out

You really shouldn't be leaving live cables resting on carpet  :open_mouth: that's just asking for a fire to start and goes against basic home/electrical safety

That was my first thought.  It might be that they determine OP was responsible for the fire.  It certainly looks that way if it was plugged in, live and just left draped on a carpet.

I’m pretty sure the carpet didn’t cause the cable to catch fire, it could have been on a kitchen tile and it still would have caught fire due to a fault in the cable/connection. I’m not after a new carpet just a replacement of a faulty cable. Does everyone unplug all their electrical items or turn every one of them off every night?

No, but do turn the socket off.

Give over.  It's an extra-low voltage charging lead, not a live cable.  There's no excuse for it to catch fire.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

After seeing all the fires caused by cheap cables I’ve always bought genuine Apple ones, when a 2m one is 30/40 quid each you expect it to be less likely to have problems.

Unless of course, the cable or connector got damaged due to someone stepping on it, (and as the OP stated that it was near the end of a bed, this is a possibility)  a pet nibbling it or a short circuit occurred because of a tiny bit of something conductive in the carpet.

I find it hard to believe that Apple would kick up such a fuss over replacing a cable bought from themselves.
