Beware Leisure Guard travel insurance?

I purchased Leisure Guard travel insurance last year and received an email yesterday, on 5 February at 9:53 am, stating that the policy would auto renew. Last year's policy was due to expire on 11 February. I was surprised because I normally opt out of auto renew facility because I insist on retaining absolute control of my finances. I immediately clicked on the opt out link of the aforementioned email and received confirmation, at 11:01 am, that I would not be covered after 10 February2020. At 16:04 I received an email stating that my policy had auto-renewed!
This morning I telephoned and was told that there had been a computer error and all policies had auto-renewed. I was then told that the money would be refunded and I would see it in my account within 3 to 5 days!
They, therefore, have taken my money six days before it was allegedly due to be paid! They will now have my money for three to five days for no reason. Their computer error accidentally ignored the fact that I had opted out and proceeded anyway. Am I being cynical when I think that, if they do this to all their policy holders, they have generated a massive cash flow injection at their customers cost? Or am I reading way too much into this and it continues to be a genuine, albeit profitable, mistake? If it is a mistake that is one thing; if it is not how do we protect ourselves from 'accidental charges' from what appear to be reputable businesses? Has anyone any ideas that don't involve Mr G Fawkes' solution.

I have annual travel insurance with them and trying to speak to someone regarding a claim is impossible. Emails are bounded back and the phone line cuts you off.0
