    I believe the other driver was driving a hire vehicle.
    Thanks for everyone’s helpful replies. It’s just a shock when you receive something like this in the post, completely unexpected.
  • Are the police stupid or what? If someone phones them and says there's been a minor collision and no one was injured, why don't they just tell the caller to contact their insurance company. I recall many years ago when I had a minor shunt this is exactly what happened. Why not now, and why not a consistent approach from Plod?

    That's exactly what they do.

    If there is an allegation of an offence then they will also require corroboration in the form of additional witnesses or dashcam footage. If there is no corroboration they will tell you to report it to your insurers.
