Using Tesco phone with O2 sim

If I buy a Tesco PAYG phone can I use an O2 sim card in it without having to unlock the phone? I understand that Tesco use the O2 system but don't know if they're interchangeable. Can anyone help please?

You will most likely have to get the phone unlocked.

Similarly, Virgin uses t-mob network, but they still require the phone to be unlocked first.

i can use a virgin sim in my t-mobile locked SE k810i and k700i, but my virgin locked k750i wont accept tmobile sims without being unlocked.

o2 phones will accept tesco sims, but tesco phones will not accept o2 sims unless they are unlocked

My understanding (from what I've read on forums) is that you can use a Tesco SIM in an O2 phone, but not the other way round.

Also, it appears you can use an Asda SIM in a Vodaphone phone.

You can also use a Giff Gaff SIM in an O2 phone.
