RAC Breakdown complaint

  • No thanks required for me mate. I could see you were asking for advice as to whether you had a sound claim against the RAC, nothing more. You had really good advice about the potential double claiming. Sadly, many replies were unhelpful and focussed on you not having a spare and how stupid you and anyone else is who doesn’t carry one (I don’t so I’m an idiot too), despite the eco-saving reasons for not carrying one. If you do have your day in court, the fact that you didn’t carry a spare will make no difference to your case as it is irrelevant, so you can just ignore those comments. You seem to me to have a strong case for compensation for the failure to provide you with a reasonable service (don’t forget in civil law it is the balance of probabilities, 51% in your favour and you win). It is people like you that complain when justified that kicks these companies in touch – so well done you. My advice still stands, it is a lot of hassle to go through court and the financial gain in your case is small. If you do still decide to you might want to check whether you will be liable for costs if it goes against you. There are better legal forums to join, with people who have the necessary skills to answer your questions and help you to prepare your case. All the best mate.

What are those, then?  You're not talking about the couple of quid per year it probably saves in fuel, are you?  One blowout and any eco-savings are well and truly busted by calling out a breakdown service to make a special trip in a diesel van.

I wish I could have a spare tyre in my boot, I have always had them in all my other cars. However my current car has no space for one as the boot has a gigantic bass speaker that takes all the room so am left with the gunk.
  • On an individual basis you are right. On a global basis of 1 billion cars each carrying 20kg of spare wheel which will be used on average once in 5 years then perhaps you are wrong. I couldn't see how using a few plastic bags a year could affect the world and individually it doesn't but collectively we all now know the answer, except possibly Mr Trump.

That's a fair point.  I guess it's up to individual drivers to weigh up the risk and consequences of a lack of a spare wheel.  With the roads in the state they are, I wouldn't risk it.
  • It is very hard for me to come to terms with the necessity of lifestyle changes we should all adopt to save life on this planet. I was a massive sceptic for many years but Sir David Attenborough and other eco-warriors are starting to enlighten me and I hope billions of others like me.
