RAC Breakdown complaint

  • I think you need to take note of the point above regarding a ‘double dip’ refund - your issue was sorted, so you can’t expect a refund for the call out AND your membership.

A refund of the call out alone would be reasonable, IMO.

So the first time you reslised you didn't have a spare was when you had a puncture? Really?

    You are way over-reacting btw
  • But that would be refunding you twice, meaning that you pay NOTHING for the breakdown. You should ask either for a refund of the costs you paid to the alternate service, or they refund you the annual fee, not both.

Inconvenience? It's not their fault you drove into a hole.

    Fixed that for you.

TBF some new cars don't even have the space for a spare wheel (full-sized, space-saver or not) and only come with a gunk and pump solution, so, as usual, it's worth checking the all-important small print before signing up & paying for a service that may well exclude you in the event of a puncture. I'd be surprised at any breakdown firm excluding punctures from recovery given this fact and the likelihood it's therefore likely to be lucrative for them to cover punctures!
I lost faith with the 2 big recovery forms many years ago now when they started chipping away at this & that being excluded and kept ramping up the premium and so went to a breakdown insurance solution instead.
I'd suggest you ask for a refund but expect to be declined and take your business elsewhere at renewal.
  • I wonder if King Edward VII would give them Royal status today?

I suspect he would be disappointed that the gentlemen drivers of the day are not more resourceful and simultaneously despair that they are reliant on a service for the most basic of motor car troubles because of their unpreparedness.

You sound like a real charmer Mr Duck

I am thinking of taking the RAC to the small claims court and opinions for and against would be much appreciated.  I know it is a petty amount and perhaps it is silly to be worked up about it but I feel really badly treated by them. I very much appreciate if others feel this was fair service by the RAC or whether they have failed in their duty of care.
Clearly not good service or even acceptable service. I think you've answered your own question by stating it is a petty amount and you have been worked up about it. My suggestion is that you vote with your feet, do some research online and see which services have the best feedback. I know you'll feel you are letting them get away with it but life is sometimes too short to let these things get to you. I've read through the other posts and there is some good advice amongst the opinionated tosh about the reason for the call out. Good luck my friend

Instead of selectively replying to posts, how about thanking those who have given you advice?
Also, you've not answered my question / statement - do you not think it's unfair that they refund your membership AND the call out? You can't possibly think it's fair you get both!
  • Thank you Matty for picking up on my failure to respond to Tigeroonie who correctly points out that to claim for the breakdown refund and for the third party service I employed is unfair. Thank you also to Custard Pie whose advice I will take. Apologies to Aylesbury Duck for my response to his post regarding my stupidity in not having a spare wheel in my car and to only rely on the manufacturer's recommended solution of a tube of gunk; I have now bought a full size spare wheel. I have also added thanks to most of the replies.
