Fit a cheap SSD(less than £20) in the place of the currently slow hard drive and watch the performance improve dramatically.

Of course there will be the usual groans from the dinosaurs and snowflakes.... that it is too much for them to contemplate.

Now you can all go back to having a natter over a cup of tea.

That's very kind, thank you. Funnily enough, someone else started a thread about a Dell battery, and someone recommended an online shop there as well, so I'll have a look at both that and this seller you've posted.

It is worth considering the SSD as well - I am technically illiterate but managed it by being talked through the process by the person whose posts have now been deleted but who is normally more helpful.

Ah, okay - thank you! I say 'slow' - it takes a couple of minutes to be ready. Slower than people are probably now used to, but meets my needs. Ever since I had it it's offered me the change to Upgrade to Windows 8 (I think) I've just never been bothered, in case I lose everything! Must do a back up first.

Swapping the old and slow storage method within to the much faster solid state drive, will reduce that start up time to under thirty seconds. With everything else being improved at the same time.
No chance to lose any of your data, as it will remain on the old and slow drive.So not even a need to do a back-up. Best solution for you.
