    SFP? Do you mean STP?

SFP = Small Form-factor Plugable, and relates to modules you plug into switches and routers (e.g. from Cisco) to enable different port types (Ethernet, fibre SC, LC, FC etc.)
No, I did mean SFP, STP is something else.

I know what SFP cables are as I use them every day, I asked because I couldn't understand what other type of connection OP was looking for. Some routers have SFP+ connections for 10 Gbps speeds (which are easily obtainable with copper anyway), but I didn't think ONT devices have them.

It's supplied by TalkTalk through CityFibre.

Vodafone seem to be a lot more expensive. With the 500mbps and 900mbps what is the upload speed? With TalkTalk it is symmetrical with 900mbps both up and down.

Yes, both symmetrical.....There is quite a difference in pricing then.
I think I'll play Vodafone and Virgin off against each other and see what transpires.
I'm not looking for more speed as I already get just under 400Mbps with Virgin, but a cost reduction would be nice. Vodafone pricing is a tenner less for a bit more and no price rises during contract. So, they are out in front at the moment.

    Hi there folks,

Having just got Fttp to home, I am using a 3m yellow Ethernet lead to connect from the ONT box to my router seems to work ok but don't know if using the Ethernet cable slows down the speed?

I didn't have another cable available and engineer seems to think this one is ok.

    Thanks for any advice.
The speeds you get will mostly be determined by what is at each end of the cable. The ports the cable plugs into will have a speed rating and the lowest one will be the maximum speed you can transfer.

Cat5 cable is rated to 100mbps and Cat5e/Cat6 will be rated at 1Gbps but you can probably get Cat5 to run faster over short distances with no issues..

I'd never heard of SFP cables ... a quick search shows that it appears to be a cable with an SFP module attached. So I was still mostly right. ;)

I think if I had the choice you have I'd get the 500mbps which is very fast. The big thing for me is the upload speed being symmetrical whereas the virgin upload speed was 10% of the download speed when I was with them, stingy !!!!!!s.

Also the openreach upload speed is a lot slower. Whenever you read advertisements for these services it seems to be very hard to find out what the upload speed is, they only seem to mention the download speed and they seem to take advantage of this to be tight.

Right or wrong, SFP cables are called SFP cables :D

SFP ports are fairly common in high-end switches and routers, so if OP didn't want to use RJ45, SFP or SFP+ would have been the first alternative, although as I said, I really doubt that ONT devices have SFP ports for clients.
