I was about to tell you that a cheap consumer grade printer like that wont support duplex (both sided printing) but then I came across this :-

    https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/automatic-printing-both-sides-on-HP-ENVY-6220/td-p/6778259

Which may or may not be of some use to you.
Even so, I will still be VERY surprised if it is possible without any extra hardware (duplexing unit) because it basically has to have some internal mechanism to flip over the paper, and iv never seen that in a small unit like that

The full instructions are in there on how to set up duplexing from windows, and it does mention your model - so give it a go and see

why would the settings allow me to set that setting if it couldnt do it? also there is a section in the manual about it but when i follow that it just prints the one side. am i supposed to turn over the sheet and put it back into the main tray or something like that?

My printer doesn't automatically print both sides as it's just not capable.
So I print page one, flip the paper, re-insert then print page two.

You don;t need to do them one at a time, just print the even number pages then put the paper back in and print the odds. Explained here

ok, in my view it is not designed to print on both sides but misleads me to thinking it can. really to get it on both sides i just did the usual print on one side then turned it over and put it back in and then hit print again. that seems the only way to get what i wanted printed on both sides. its quite silly for them to include settings and instructions for printing both sides when it doesnt even have the function.

As Andy said in post #2, if the printer doesn't have a duplex unit (to automatically flip the pages over) then it has to be done manually.

Per post #5 you can do this for multiple pages ... just make sure that the pages are in the correct order when flipping over. :)

    From HP Envy 6220 manual:
To print on both sides of the paper (Windows)
1.Load paper in the input tray...
    2.From your software, select Print.
3.Make sure your printer is selected.
4.Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box.Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer Properties, Printer, or Preferences...
5.On the Printing Shortcut tab, select a shortcut which supports the Print On Both Sides setting. Select an option from the Print On Both Sides drop-down list.To change other print settings, click the other tabs..
6.Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.
7.Click Print or OK to begin printing.

My current printer does automatic duplex printing, which I found out purely by accident when I downloaded a printable form and it sucked the paper back in and printed the other side - it was a wonderful revelation to me and I use it daily now.

But I did have one a few years ago that was semi-automatic and you'd send the multi page document to the printer, print one side, flip the paper, then just press a button on the printer to then print the second side - it saved you the task of manually telling it to print the second side.

Could yours be doing something similar - in that it's waiting for you to tell it that you've flipped the paper in readiness for the second side?

thanks i have seen it but thats a fib because it just prints one side. me being clueless i thought if i set the setting and hit print it would come out printed on both sides. as i have recently said it seems i just have to manually do one side and then the other. so instead of utilising a function that doesnt actually exist, i have to use my intiative.

possibly but it started churning away for ages when i opened the tray so i wasnt keen on it and there wasnt any obvious thing to do to print it.
