Old bottle of wine

Found an old bottle of wine in the cellar, a Cote du Rhone 1983. A fair bit of sediment in the bottom, but the cork looks to be in good condition with the level well up in the neck. Currently have four options.
  1. Keep.
  2. Drink.
  3. Give away.
  4. Bin.
Opinions ?
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

    It probably won't kill you to open it and sniff it.

    Your cellar will certainly have been better than keeping it upstairs but keeping something for that long, I think you'd really want to have been keeping it in ideal conditions. Over nearly 40 years there's bound to have some temperature fluctuation down there. Humidity looks to have been okay. The label is still on.

    Hachette is the bible of wines. They don't go back that far with this wine co-operative, but none of the wines are well rated and the vast majority aren't recommended for keeping at all, although I found one that could be kept for five years. The more recent ones seem to be better received.

    Storage is everything; we opened a some 30+ year old wines a couple of years ago. One was a bit brown and didn't taste great, another tasted reasonable.

    I had a mid-80s Bordeaux opened after about 16 years. It tasted pretty bad on opening, however after a few hours' exposure to air it improved a lot. So decanting and letting it breath might be worth doing here.

    When they are churning out 3,500,000 bottles or more each year, it is no surprise the wines have a low regard. Not exactly in the same league as wines from Roman!e-Conti.


    There is one more option to add to my list - Save it for a house warming party in Brum :p

    Was it lying on its side (good) or upright (bad)?

    If it was upright the chances are that the cork will have dried out and allowed air in that will have oxygenated the wine and degraded or even ruined it.

    If it was lying on its side it might still be on good condition.
