You thought that your heating system was the most expensive item that consumes energy, closely followed by your immersion heater, tumble dryer, kettle etc?

Well, it turns out that we've all been hopelessly wrong !

According to Gulf, it's the fridge ! They think It consumes around one-third of the total energy in your household...

Then it's a Sky+ box, 45 watts, which is 394kWh a year.

Depends on how long the pump is operating per year for gas central heating, I'd have thought. Don't CH pumps use about the same number of Watts but with a much more frequent duty cycle?

The claim in the OP is nonsense though, my freezer consumes a lot more than my fridge does for a start!

Are we talking about energy or electricity as I guess most people's heating would use the most energy whether it be gas or leccy.

If we are just talking about electricity, then that would depend on whether you heat by leccy or something else.

In the end we all use energy whether it be gas, oil, leccy or something else in different ways and the highest consuming device for one house hold could well be different in another.

I always take these sort of comments with a pinch of salt.

What's the betting the numbers relate to American homes and appliances. Just looking on Sears website, even a modern U.S. large fridge-freezer uses 715 kWh a year. Older ones must be horrific!

Untrue. If the drier has a decent sensor, a part load will dry more quickly thus using less energy - though it may use more energy per garment. Conversely an overfull drier is ineffective and will spend its time using energy but not drying the clothes.

My heating uses about 12,000 kWh a year, a lot more than my fridge

Could be Gulf fobbing you off by choosing an appliance we cant do without to explain high energy consumption, and are of course welcoming it but obviously dont want you to question what your using.
