Al Rayan Bank Asking for Personal Information

I opened a 1yr account with Al Rayan in June last year.

Yesterday I received an email from them saying they needed some additional information to help detect fraud, tax evasion etc.

I clicked on the link and the first question is asking for my annual income including salary, pension, dividends and anything else.

This seems a bit intrusive. Is it normal for banks to ask this?

Btw I'm pretty sure it's a genuine email and not phishing.

Yes. There are a number of reasons why they would want to know this about their clients - for example anti money laundering.

Thank you. They didn't ask this before I made the deposit 7 months ago. What would happen if I refused to provide this now?

I bailed out half way through an application to open an account with them because of the info they requested.

Al Rayan confirmed that it's a genuine email, but the security lapses are astonishing. You really shouldn't be clicking on a link in an unsolicited email!
