Just asking for advice. We bought car 1 week ago in Edinburgh, but we are living in Inverness, so it's pretty far. When we was travelling back then the engine light came on, so we contacted the dealer in the same minute. He adviced that drive it and it will disappear. It didn't. Yes, maybe it's my mistake, but I'm not good in cars. So 2 days later we went couple of garages and all of them said the same, that need to be done urgent repairs and the cost +/- in all garages was the same £500. So we contacted the dealer down Edinburgh and explained the situation, he said that it can't be right and he wants to check by himself and that we need to bring the car down to him. But in all the garages they adviced that it's not safe to drive that long distance, but the dealer don't want to pay for the repairs which would be done here near us in official VW dealership. So basically I don't know what to do, because I know that by law I can return the car, but in reality I can't take it back, because it's not safe to drive, so I'm stuck - only option to get it back is to repair the car here to be safe to drive, but the seller don't want to pay for it. So yeah, Im stuck. Any advice will be appreciated.

We will not need to pay for it? We would like to keep the car if it would get fixed. But the only option he is giving to bring the car down there by myself. For me it's fuel costs, hotel for a day(the repairs in local garages would be one full day) and another fuel costs to come back + to take days off the work. And if the car stops in middle of road then what - he will same that I broke the car completely.

The distance between you and the supplier doesn't affect your legal rights. It is, though, your problem - it's one of the things you need to take into account when buying from a distance away. If the dealer had delivered the car, then it would be theirs.

Did they actually look at the car and read any fault codes? Without that, they're guessing just as much as the supplier was.

You can arrange the car to be transported to him. You can come to an agreement whereby you pay somebody locally to read the fault codes, and then he decides what to do.

Is there any warranty on the car? If so, the warranty provider would be worth involving - they may have a repairer nearer you.

How old a car, what type of car, how high a mileage and what sort of price are we talking about?

Yes, the onus is on you to get the car back to the seller, and as it will cost hundreds of pounds it's extremely unlikely he'll pay. It's not his fault that you live 150+ miles away.

I'd be inclined to get it done locally, and put it down to experience. And in future only buy locally!
  • The car is 2016 VW Amarok. 90,000 miles. We paid for the first by phone(£400) and then by card when we went down there - £11000. If I paid that £400 then it doesn't count like a distance selling?
The local garages did check/read the fault codes - and all of them are the same. It wasn't like just guessing the problems. We have 1 month warranty from the car dealership/car centre - it's small dealership. I already told that in different garages they find the same fault codes, but he don't care - he want to check by himself, I said I can show him papers from all diagnostics. + I paid for all the diagnostics, but Im not claiming that money back.

As already advised, you need to transport the car to him for him to rectify the faults. I have never understood why people buy cars over such a distance - even more so when they expect the supplying dealer to deal with the logistical issues when things go wrong.

No it's not distance selling so you can forget about that. Again, what exactly is the fault?

Reason is price - up here in Scotland and down Scotland the price difference is sometimes even more than £2000. This is first time when dealer don't want to repair car locally by local garage. We got advice that dealer need to organise the return of the car, because we paid by phone the first payment. + He told us that the car is completely checked and in good order - which was lie.

Then you got poor advice from someone.

If you don't want to drive it then check around for car transporter costs.
