Without a mobile signal, I've got no communication (no landline).
Such is your choice, if you choose to move to somewhere with no mobile signal.

BTW, to receive an SMS I have to prop my mobile on the roof of the car for five minutes, so...
And internet is something I need every day.
Better get down to Costa, then.

That's exactly why I made sure I live somewhere with a good signal. But my comment was in response to the claim that "it's no problem if there's no mobile signal" - for some people it is a problem.

Again, that might work for some people, but not, I would imagine, for most. The point being that for most people, internet at home is a must, not a nice-to-have nowadays.

And the other point being that, for most people, mobile via internet is an absolutely viable fallback - for many, it's their primary.

For those of us with no mobile signal (I have to prop my phone on the car roof for five minutes to receive an SMS - literally...), short broadband outages are to be expected. It comes with the territory. My nearest Costa is a 40 mile round trip, but I could head into a dozen places nearer and use their internet - or pop round to friends' houses, as they do with us.

It's only problem during an emergency so if you tell me your mum is likely to have a bad fall, or a some other medical emergency and that she is unable to use a normal phone [ because let's face it, the oder generation are the ones most likely to have a home phone] and can't remember 999 I might believe you.
Being out of contact of facebook and emails for a couple of hours is not going to kill anyone. Literally no one is that important they need to be consantly in touch. Except Kim Jong Un. In his head.

  • We were waiting ages to exchange as well, something got held up at the top of the chain and it was really frustrating not being able to do anything about it. I didn't chase the EA or solicitors every day, as there was nothing they could do either. I probably called them once a week just to check on things, but as others have said it's just a waiting game especially when it's with the Land Registry.

Our Land Registry issue was a bit different to yours, the one at the top had to have someone's name taking off the title and I found out that there's a month-long cooling off period that has to lapse before they do it. This is what held ours up, so I'm not sure if all Land Registry requests have this cooling off period, but it sounds like it's just stuck with them at the moment so there's nothing anyone can do.

We exchanged 4 working days before we completed, even though our lender said they needed 7 so they'll probably release them earlier if the sale depends on it. I wouldn't worry about it happening on the day you want anyway, it will happen when everything sorts itself out.

The only thing I'd worry about now is the stuff you've arranged such as Sky and deliveries etc. These will just need to be cancelled or postponed until you've exchanged and have a definite, rock solid completion date.

I also hope you haven't ordered any furniture on credit as this is a big no no until you've completed and got the keys in your hand. If your mortgage lender do a final credit check, see that on the file and aren't happy with it, then they can pull the mortgage offer at the last minute and leave you in a worse position that when you started. We didn't order any furniture on finance until we collected the keys, we just got used to sitting on the floor in the living room for a few weeks until the sofas arrived.

Being a FTB is stressful because your expectations of honesty and professionalism is quite high.

Once you've been through it a few times you know that everyone lies, especially vendors who say they will move in to rented accommodation.

It sounds like you've had a particularly obnoxious vendor though. I can't believe they are mid chain with people ready above them and they wouldn't even do searches until their buyer was ready.

If I were you I would cancel every and simply state 'once vendor is ready I will complete 7 days from exchange.'

You can chill out then and get on with your life knowing you'll have 7 days to plan moving.

For some people, not having a phone at all may only be a problem during an emergency, but for others, no mobile and no internet is a problem.  Perhaps you're thinking of temporary no signal, rather than permanently no line?  Like many people nowadays, I don't have a landline, so the mobile phone is my only phone communication.  This post is about moving in.   Reading meters and advising change of address for gas, electric, water and council tax is all online nowadays.  It isn't handy to do all these things and not have phone and internet in your home. Later, once settled in, sure, I think everyone can deal with temporary service outages as you say.  But to have no phone and no internet on the day you move in and following days, is a headache for most people.

Phone and internet can come via landline or cellular mobile. If you have the option to have either or both, but actively choose only to have one, then such is your choice.

On the other hand, I don't choose not to have any cellular signal - except insofar as I knew it was an issue when I chose to move here nearly seven years ago. But the vast majority of people have the opportunity of service provision via both.

(and when I say "no signal", I mean that to receive an SMS I need to leave my phone outside on the roof of the car for several minutes. And that's on one network. For any of the others, I'd have to get in the car and go hunt for a signal...)

Being a FTB is stressful because, not having been through the process before, you are largely unaware of the huge number of variables involved in a property sale/purchase and unprepared for the likelihood that as the process progresses often new problems are discovered that need to be dealt with and the outlook changes.

Baring some very rare examples it is simlply impossible to accurately estimate timeframe until relatively late in the process. Expect the unexpected!
