To some extent, as you get older, less really is more. It's a small house, so there's less to keep clean and tidy. But, that back non-garden is just so depressing.

Am I the only one reminded of those horrible uninviting public toilets with a stainless steel pan?

It made me think of train toilets, especially some unpleasant ones I've experienced on overnight trains in Asia.

Ah train toilets.  Remember the ones when I was a boy, you pushed a button on the floor, a flap opened and you could see the track going by down a long tube.  No wonder they said "do not use while in the station"

I think the time is approaching when I will appreciate something like that. And the back could be made quite cosy.

But why have a ramp up to the front door, but a step from the back door?

Think that's a building regs thing now to have level(ish) access to the front door? Other than being bungalows I don't think they're particularly accessible (e.g. bathroom not pictured but described as shower over a bath).

There are probably still a few trains like that now. I think it was as recent as the late 80s before trains in the UK started to be built with toilets which collect the deposits in a tank rather than just flushing them onto the track.
