30 Days notice versus new supplier

I've never managed to get my head round this.
My broadband contract with BT runs out on 3rd March and I have to give 30 days notice. So I'm assuming that I have to cancel about now otherwise do I get charged for another month (at the non-discounted price) or pro rata?
Also, I want to replace BT with a new supplier. They've said it takes roughly about 14 days for the switchover. If I apply now, does that mean I will be paying for two services at the same time for about two weeks?
How am I supposed to time this so that I switchover services without paying extra?
Thanks very much and hope you can help.

You pay BT your contract until 3rd March .
Do not cancel as you will remove the number etc ..
Switch is via the gaining provider , Sign up with xxx ISP and they do it all .
Start switch about the middle of next month .0 -
On a BT line setup if you want to move provider you find the new provider, sign up with them and they do all the legwork. All you do is swap a box over on switchover day (or reconfigure a router as appropriate) and then you're away cooking on gas.
The concept of 30 days notice is more for if you're not staying with a provider and you're not taking a new broadband package from somebody else OR you are moving from BT to Virgin.
With regards to billing you have always been billed a month in advance and because of this there will always be a risk of paying twice for a short period of time.
So for argument's sake your monthly bill is £30 and there are 30 days in a month. You pay DeLorean internet £30 on the 1st, but you initiate a switch to Flux Capacity Internet that takes place on the 15th. When the switch goes through and you're up and running with Flux, DeLorean effectively owe you £15 for the unused days.
So you get the remaining credit back when DeLorean generate a final bill, but in the meantime Flux may have taken their fee for the upcoming month, 15th-14th so you are temporarily out of pocket but it balances out in the end.0 -
If you minimum term expires on 3rd March and you didn’t want to be a customer after that with anyone that uses Openreach ‘lines’ then around 1st Feb you would contact BT and say ‘I quit’, but if you want to keep service just with someone else that also uses a Openreach, around 10-14 days before the 3rd March you contact a new provider and let them serve your notice to BT, the 30 days doesn’t apply but obviously if the new company take over before 3rd March you may get a small early termination
If the changeover is a few days after 3rd March, and your old price is £1 a day (£30 a month ) and the out of contract price is £45 a month, ( £1.50 a day) and the changeover is 3 days late , it’s £1.50, extra , hardly worth stressing over trying to get the ‘exact’ date0
