  • That's pretty normal round here. Pretty front gardens are quite old fashioned and don't suit areas like this that well, its not a pretty village setting here.

I know but this is problem I have to overcome in my mind. My target market should I wish to sell this house would be the same as that 2 storey - because I am not old or immobile. I am trying to determine if this stigma against bungalows will be a problem, and people are saying it isn't whilst making posts (like yours) which imply that it will be. eg "they are so different".

Pretty gardens are not in anyway old fashioned and indeed the horrible paving in the two story house is well recognised as being environmentally detrimental, so very "on message" at the moment.

The properties are so different but if your future target market is people looking for a two story building then don't buy a bungalow.

Not sure what stigma you believe attaches to a bungalow.

I want to be able to modernise the bungalow such that people won't care that it is one. In my mind this means it has to have family appeal. Is it possible with this one?

Depends what family appeal means and what your plans are for modernisation, but there is no reason why it will not appeal to a wide range of perspective buyers.

Of course it's possible. But remember you buy a house (or bungalow) for you to live in, not make it how you think the next owner would like it (and 50% won't like your improvements).

    You are yet again overthinking

Is this the extent of the plot? That's a lot of land. What have next door done at the end of theirs? Looks like a huge garage and another outbuilding or some sort of annexe. If you don't want a large garden is there potential for splitting the plot in two and getting planning permission for another property?

I probably would have concerns about any house yes, unless it was perfect and cost £1.
Personally, if I came across a house for £1 I'd have a lot of concerns about it :)
  • If that is indeed the bungalow in the picture then that garden has a lot of family appeal already.

I think its an amazing house, and has a lot of potential.
The perfect fixer-upper. Completely clean and live-able, that you can do work on over time to make it your own. If i was looking and in that area, I would have been interested. And i'm in my early 30's.

You either like it or you don't.
If you weren't sure, you shouldn't have put an offer in.

Its hard making big decisions by oneself, especially when one has been badly burned before.

I'm just looking for reassurance that its not a terrible mistake.
  • I don’t think there’s a stigma around bungalows - I’m 25 and plan on starting a family in years to come and would’ve looked at bungalows in my area if any had been about when buying a house last year.

I also think you can’t spend too much time worrying about what resale would be like you have to have a house you enjoy living in not a house the next owners will enjoy living in.;)
