House insurance renewal premium

Renewal of house insurance is due soon. The premium quoted by the existing insurer is £195, up from £176 last year. I think I read somewhere that house insurance has gone up quite a bit generally, so I'm not sure whether to bother getting comparison quotes or not.

I just thought I would see if anyone knows if 10-11% increase is typical?

I always look around and factor the overall with cashback.

Yes, but never rely on the Cashback, I've had several rejected in the past. If you get it its a bonus.

Mine too went up by just over £20. Easy, get with another company same cover but cheaper, also plus cashback (caveats as above).

    No such thing as loyalty.

You should ALWAYS get comparison quotes when any insurance is due for renewal and even when the quote is cheaper. If you don't do a comparison you have no idea if the renewal is competitive or not compared to current prices and the time it took you to come here and start this thread you could have done a comparison anyway...

It takes less than 5min to get quotes through a comparison site, you might not only get better price but also better over/service - Always worth checking.

For what is worth ours went up about 15%, there were a couple of cheaper quotes, but for a poorer cover/service so stuck with Aviva for one more year.

Our home insurance was virtually unchanged. £1488 this year compared to £1454 last year. However, we dont use a provider with early year discounting. So, premiums tend to be relatively stable each year.

If you use a provider with early year discounting then you need to be prepared to move every year.

Consider (if you drive) getting car and home insurance combined. I got a multi car insurance and added my home insurance to the package, worked out I got home insurance (like for like from my previous company) for £68. The renewal came last year and I haggled it down and kept with the same company, Admiral.

I am looking to renew my house insurance..buildings and content.  I did make one claim last year, but I had protected no claims bonus. I have received my renewal and the price has risen from £181 to £314!  So I did a GoCompare declaring the one claim and the price is still around £290! When I requoted  not declaring the claim, it reduced down to £125.(the cheapest). Most were around £180. Any advice out there....whats the point of having protected no claims?

Comparison sites don't always provide all the options to give a true like-for-like comparison.  If you need anything other than an absolute bog standard policy you still need to go to each potential insure site to fine tune.  Comparison sites can certainly be a good starting point, although not all major insurers are on them.
