Our home insurance was virtually unchanged. £1488 this year compared to £1454 last year. However, we dont use a provider with early year discounting. So, premiums tend to be relatively stable each year.

If you use a provider with early year discounting then you need to be prepared to move every year.

Ours actually went down this year to £1224 from £1253.  OK, only £2% but better than nothing

Just had my Legal & General renewal through & went up almost 25% from £293 to £365. Comparisons show potential policies down as low as £151 but as has been said, it's difficult to know you have an exact like-for-like policy.

I not only read the advice from MSE about getting comparison quotes when renewing home & contents insurance, I actually followed it.
Finding the increased costs of the re-build value of the house, and nearly everything in the house, was not a nice surprise.
In spite of the increased cost of everything I was stunned to get quotes from several new providers, all coming in at around 44% of the renewal request from my existing provider.
Having followed the advice on researching current replacement costs, I'm fairly confident  will get like-for-like cover at a lot less cost.

  • Fed up of huge year-on-year increases in house insurance. Strikes me this industry works more like a protection racket, than a service. 2023 premium = £1,472, 2024 = £1872, this year for 2025 = £2,750. Not much competition for them as we're grade II, under thatch with a wood burner, the customer equivalent of an untouchable in insurance terms so they squeeze us dry. Not looking for sympathy but could do with some fairness and a bit of competition from providers. Not even good old NFU mutual is helping. Feel like selling up and buying a flat! Any (sensible) thoughts?
