Wrong parts but already installed

Hi

I ordered some PC components online. The company sent me the wrong components and I installed them thinking my order had been upgraded. It seemed reasonable at the time because the company had delivered late with the excuse they didn't have some parts in stock.

They have now realised their mistake and expect me to dismantle and rebuild my PC despite the inconvenience this will cause me. They prefer to believe I installed the components knowing they were not intended for me.

That doesn't feel fair. I think they should rebuild the PC for me. I'm not sure what the law says about it. I want to do what's right - any suggestions?

Thanks.

Just tell them as you have on here with more info about order numbers, dates etc.

How much difference in cost are the components ?

It's probably not unreasonable for them to ask for the return, but you could point out that they are now used and they may allow you to keep them as a goodwill (assuming we are not talking huge cost difference) or they may allow you to keep at a reduced cost.

They have just realised the mistake, but really, you should have queried at the start rather than assuming.

Engage with them, be polite and honest and forget about them rebuilding the PC for you, that won't happen

Would you have installed them had they sent you inferior parts? Would you assume you had been downgraded?

You should have checked. It’s on you now

    Thanks Jamo.

    Ordered components ~ £450
    Delivered components ~ £800

Ideally, I'd be happy to pay the difference, but the delivered parts have only slightly better performance. I guess that's price/performance curves for you.

The PC build is quite complicated, it has custom water cooling. Which makes the prospect of rebuilding unappealing to all parties. I think it would take me between 4 and 8 hours to do.

I guess it's in everyone's interests to agree on a payment. But they don't want to reduce the price and I don't value the upgrade very highly.

    Thanks Katrina.

I appreciate your perspective. I would not have assumed they'd downgraded me on purpose. The order was supposed to be next day but took 5 days so a modest upgrade seemed reasonable . Especially since they'd told me the delay was due to part shortages.

So 4 to 8 hours to dismantle and rebuild to what you should have got or keep the items and pay the extra £350.00 .

On a side note was a new motherboard and Windows 10 involved in this machine? Only asking as Windows 10 license/key is tied to the motherboard so if motherboard has to go back I am not sure if your Windows 10 can be activated on another motherboard. If no motherboard was installed then what I have written doesn't matter.

Thanks Boohoo - yep, those are my two unappealing options. :-)

Windows wasn't included, it was a motherboard, CPU, cooler and RAM bundle. To my surprise, Windows install survived the upgrade without any complaint about license keys. Anyway, not an issue in this case.
  • Almost double the price is not a 'modest upgrade' typical of a short delay...

I'd make them an offer. How about £250 instead of £350?

Thanks Giraffe - yes, seems like that's the consensus. Either negotiate a number or accept I have to do the work.

Thanks Katrina - the performance upgrade is modest, I found out the price difference later.

They'd have to take you to court if they wish to extract money from you unwillingly so if you offer them something reasonable this would work in your favour.

Assuming you are a consumer building a personal computer I'd offer them half the difference, if they don't take it have the computer rebuilt by paying someone and counterclaim for the cost.

  • I would offer maybe half the difference.

Engage with them and remind them that they will be responsible for the postage and presumably you would want to cancel you original order etc etc

Sadly they do have the right to ask for the components back, but I am pretty sure you can come to a more amicable solution. Just keep calm and try and keep emotions/feelings out of any communication - be truthful and factual.
