Another vote for the iphone SE; you get facetime, Siri voice control, etc. You can buy refurbished ones for about £75.

  • I found quite a few currently supported phones under 6" Some are only available refurbished, or secondhand. The Xiaomi warranty is probably not worth bothering with, best to buy from a reputable marketplace.

I do have a concern that ios14 may leave SE and/or 7 stranded but current rumours say that they will get another year.

    IPhone 7 4.5" £140 s/h

    IPhone se 4" £75 s/h

    Sony zx1 4.5" £230 s/h

Samsung Galaxy xcover 4s £224 new or refurbished £110 as new 12 month warranty.

    Moto G7 5.7" screen £99 new
    14.7 x 7.1 x 0.8 cm; 150 g

Xiaomi Mi 9 se 5.7" £249 Amazon new
    14.8 x 7.1 x 0.7 cm

Xiaomi Redmi 7a 5.45" £87 ebay UK seller
    14.3 x 7 x 1 cm
  • I'll add the Nokia 3.1 (one android) to the list at 5.2" as suggested.

Well pleased with a pristine Note 9 from them .

It's difficult finding an up-to-date smaller-screen phone but the Nokia 3.1 might suit at 5.2". If you can find one, though there's a few new still on eBay at a good price (£75-ish). The model is a little old but it will get the latest Android 10 update soon too.

I think that maybe you stand more chance than me, whose mother requires a 3G flip-phone. As an 80yr old technophobe she has no choice other than to buy another of the poor-quality & now broken one she already has.
My 80 year old mother refused to try a smartphone as she was secure using her clamshell Samsung. She was afraid of dropping a glass phone rather than technophobic.
My brother ignored her and bought the phone he really wants for himself Xiaomi Mi 8T. A 7" screen which is quite heavy and not an easy introduction to smartphones.

Mum had it set up for her so she gets WhatsApp video calls on the sofa rather than at her pc.
. She loves seeing us on that big screen.
Miui has large icons and finger print unlock. She made me write down how to operate it as a phone and as a video caller so if she forgets she can start from beginning.
The phone sits in her handbag otherwise and the big screen and icons are easy on her eyes.

The advantage of getting such a phone is that if mum gave up on it several people would be happy to receive it!
