Service history

Options
Hi there looking at a 4.5 year old car (308, 1.2 puretech engine). The service history is:
1 year/ 5,000 miles
1.9 years / 14,000 miles
1.7 years / 16,000 miles

Service schedule is 12,000 miles/1 year whichever first.

Any opinions on how this should affect the price?

    Who's selling it?
It shouldn't affect the price you wish to pay, whatever excuse you may wish to use, the owner has the last say of it they wish to sell it to you.

So it was not serviced for almost 2 years because of the low miles? Parked up unused or 9000 1 mile journeys with a cold engine?

Seller will probably say its low mileage and worth lots where the buyer should say but its not a full service history so possibly neglected and worth less.

Personally mileage means little if the servicing is spot on.

So it has been owned by someone who totally ignored the service schedule? That would probably affect the price I would pay down to £0.

Has it done 5, 14 and 16 thousand between services or is it

    1 year @ 5,000 miles
    1.9 years @ 14,000 miles
    1.7 years @ 16,000 miles

It is being sold by an independent dealer and has had 2 keepers. I don't know what the history is of how it is but first year was obviously 5k miles and then 8k miles for the other 3 (assuming its spent 6 months with dealers).

Norman Castle - that's between services.

I should probably add, I tend to run cars until they are scrap.

The dealership is trying to sell me an autoguard warranty but from what I've read aftermarket warranties are next to useless.

I doubt they'll budge much on price as they are probably hoping someone will be along and not bother actually looking at the service history.

So if you're not worried about resale value, the question is simply one of whether the service history makes you want to find a different car, or if you're happy with this one.
  • Ultimately, it depends on how much the poor servicing will have affected it long term which is unknowable but should to an extent of reduced the life of the engine/car.

There is another car which is quite a bit further away that is very similar for 1.2k more (higher trim level (which I don't care about), slightly lower mileage 30k compared to 37k, and i assume better service history as is manufacturer approved) so debating, which is more money saving option.

I think it also depends on the particular model and engine...how durable is the engine with minimal or below optimal servicing? I have no knowledge of those Puretech engines but what I'm getting at is that with a lot of older cars they could take heavy abuse with minimal servicing..my ford focus would be a prime example..it's been serviced but not perfectly yet it just keeps going and take it all in its stride. I don't know how fickle those puretechs are but if they are reasonably reliable and durable then maybe you might be willing to take a risk....

My car is a 2L petrol turbo and I struggle to do 6K PA, it gets an oil change done by me as the stealerships have not always used the right oil, personally I wouldn't be too worried over the SH at least it's been serviced recently.

Don't worry about the lack of miles, probably had a major accident and has been in the garage being rebuilt.
