First Direct Digital Secure Key Activation

I don't access my First Direct accounts much, so until now I've never bothered to switch from the physical Secure Key to using the Digital Secure Key, but as the display on the physical device is starting to look a bit dim I thought now would be the time to finally do it.
I receive the first Activation Code by email, and enter this into the App - no problems.
It then sends me a second Activation Code through the post, and sits there waiting for me to enter this code. As the code will presumably be a few days coming, do I need to keep the app open on this screen until it arrives? Surely it'll time out? I cannot escape from this screen without cancelling the entire activation process, so I can't use the app for anything at all until the second code arrives.
Am I doing something wrong? I didn't have any problems like this setting up my HSBC and M&S Virtual Secure Keys.

Sounds as if the excitement of a digital secure key got the better of you......:D
You can't complete the set-up without the bit of the code you will receive in the post, so there's little point starting the process until it has arrived. Just close the application down and start again when you have the code. The app may or may not remember you already started. Nothing to worry about now, it will sort itself as soon as you can use the code you got through the post.0 -
OK, thanks. It just seems weird to just close the app without signing out, but there's no other option. The only "clean" way out is to cancel activation of the digital secure key.
I had to start the activation process in order to trigger an activation code to be sent through the post, so I suspect when it arrives I'll have to start all over again, and then it'll need a new activation code and I'll be back to square one.0 -
It's a long time since I activated my digitial secure key, and I don't remember having had to wait for anything in the post. Are you sure you cannot get the missing bit by email? I just watched the video on the FD site, and it doesn't mention any snail mail.
Call FD if in doubt.0 -
It requires two codes. For the first one it offers either email or postal delivery. I selected email.
For the second code, the only option offered is postal.
The video suggets that text message should be an option for the second code, but I cannot see any way to provide a mobile number, either in the app or on the web site.
The video also shows an outdated method of logging into the app - I have to use my physical secure key to get into the app.0 -
Ring them up they should be able to send it via text.Life in the slow lane0

They never sent me anything by post at all.
All done online or by text I seem to remember.0 -

Wrong.
Most banks now will not allow codes sent first time to a new number without them first being registered for a set period.
OP will need to wait for the post.0 -

FD are not most banks...:rotfl:
remember with Voice ID, they are very sure that it is the customer. Not like other banks that rely on factual & memorable details.
So OP not a new customer. No mention of different number.
I set mine up last year. Rang FD. 1st over phone & 2nd via text. Could have had it via post or email.Rep said that you can have any of them, just can't use the same method twice.Life in the slow lane0 -
Yes, I think I used email and text. Definitely didn't need to wait for anything in the post, and don't recall phoning them.0

My wife went through all this and was supposed to get a second code via email but nothing happened. It got the better of me too, I was ok on my own DSK set up, it was a breeze. So I got her to ring up, her account so she needed to speak to them. They passed her through to someone and they talked her through what she needed to do, it was a long drawn out conversation and keying in of numbers/codes but she got there in the end.
One final thought, have you deactivated a previous phones DSK as that is needed to be done first before the new one is set up.0
