Why would additional money need to be added to a bill that has already been calculated and divided into monthly payments by themselves?....in.order to "spread " the water bill over the remaining months? The booklet produced by them has calculated each monthly payment already, and for that year. So surely No need to "spread" anything at all.? It doesnt make sense. No explanation for the ten pound...

If your water bill was £1200 and was paid over 12 months it would be £100 per month.

You pay March, April and May = £300 and £900 left.

You miss June, but pay July and August = £200 and £700 left to pay.

£700 for September to February = 6 months at £116.76 per month

If you are paying on the 5th of each month, your payment is late and the water company are recalculating the remaining money and increasing your payment for the remainder of the yearly bill.

Obviously water bills are not that much a year, but it was just for ease of giving you an example.

If you want the correct answer to your £10 then you need to say:
how much your yearly bill is,
how much your instalments are per month,
how many months you pay your bill over
When you start paying your instalments
What you have paid so far
When you have made your payments

Eg whole bill is £125, March to January, instalments of £15
    paid 05/10/2019, 05/11/2019
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
