Visa and mastercard both want a £99 pre-auth and I believe Asda started rolling it out last year but stopped after an outcry. As I understand it, it is just a matter if time before it is enforced on retailers once they have upgraded their pumps.

Await the uproar when it happens....don't have £99 available?.....no fuel

One 'solution' suggested before is to use a credit card for pay at pump - not a lot of help if you want to use a debit card but is a workaround for some.

Contacted Starling and they said I needed to wait 31 days till the auth expired. So the money was only refunded to my account this week.

So Starling have a totally different timescale for auths as the rest of the banks.
Its a maximum Visa/Mastercard card its 14 days or 31 for hotels or car hire.
More often if nothing is taken it will be a couple of days.

So where are they getting these timescales from? :rotfl:

  • There was a notice in my local Morrisons petrol station tonight saying from 20th January 2020 all debit card transactions would be taken for the right amount in real time.
Just checked my credit card and the full amount is pending not the old £1.

Find a cash point and draw out a tenner and pay at the kiosk like the old days :rotfl:

I use my Starling card all the time at ASDA pay at pump, can't say I've noticed the £1 pre-auth at the pump, just that is says max fill £99. Then I notice the £30 on Starling which is usually corrected in 24-48 hours.

    Full wording from Morrisons.
From 20 January 2020 your bank will take immediate payment for the petrol purchased. Before you fill up. Please make sure you have the available funds.
Morrisons must be very clever to know how much money to take before you fill up :rotfl:
Wonder what they do if you need diesel :j

All well and good if there is a kiosk. Like the poster above my local Asda is pay at pump only.

Personally it won't be an issue for me.
