Working in the retail industry I can tell you credit card charges are nowhere near that amount.
Places such as travel agents fully cover their charges with a 2% charge onto the customer and where I work our charges are barely over 1%.
None the less, the majority of paypal transactions do not involve a credit card at all since many people already have money in their paypal account. Therefore all paypal do is move money around their own system incurring no costs at all.0 -
Mm, I'd disagree that the majority of people don't use credit cards. I can't believe all that many ebay buyers sell with paypal / get cashback and rewards into paypal / have money sitting around in their account. I do sell on ebay, and I NEVER leave money sitting there... and I'd never pay with paypal funds. My TV is broken!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
Well i don't use ebay/paypal as a business. Rather I use it to clear out items from home at about 20-30 items per month.
However when I sell something I often use the money I've recieved to pay for a new item then remove the excess funds to my account.
So when I sold some mobile phones last month I bought a printer. Likewise many people sell old dvd's then use the money to buy some newer ones.
Yes not all transactions are done with existing paypal balances but I do believe it to be over 50% of them.
Also, in the USA most people DO leave the money in their paypal account as Paypal offer an ATM card so they can withdraw funds from cash machines.0 -
I'm with fay, as soon as I get to £50 I withdraw my money. If I want to buy something and I have a paypal balance then I will move it across to my basic account and then pay using a credit card and then transfer my funds back.
I would never not use paypal unless I backed it by a credit card.
Had a very good evening yesterday sale wise, all but one item has already been paid for and sent, no hassle no sitting around waiting for cheques, no danger of items being posted too late to stand a chance of getting there for Christmas. I'd rather that than have a house full of items and sitting waiting and wondering if they will all get paid for eventually.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Is it possible to have two paypal accounts? I don't really want to upgrade to a premium account cos then i'll have to charge more to cover paypal fees, but I have almost exceeded my income allowance for the month now so can't receive any more till next month...

At the end of the day it's a business, isn't it allowed a profit margin? It's not just a processing fee like banks charge, thats it's only income.
You've got to remember, it provides no other service, thats all it does to make money. I know it's an eBay company, but it's a company of it's own right.0
