If seller a rips you off all you are left with is a throw-away hotmail address, if seller b, c, or d rips you off you have their postal address.

Any wonder why so many scammers prefer the payment means that leaves no trail to their address?

Idiotic post acknowledged. Token reply. I will not be posting an intelligent response to your tripe.

As a buyer I have no problem with non-paypal payments.
    Happy chappy

As we've seen in the case of the person ripped off for £1600(?) for a notebook, when things go wrong paypal/ebay don't even give you a postal address for your scammer.

If he'd paid by cheque at least he'd have an address, and could have done some checks before sending it off.
  • i had to wait for this letter to arrive before i could get to my cash aswell.
    keep phoning and hassling them.
this letter comes from U.S.A. apparently these letters are onlly printed off every few days,so your 15 say wait is after they have printed them,so effectively you can wait for up to a month for this letter.i waited 20 days for mine.
i would think twice about buying from someone who didnt accept paypal.
you will get lower prices for your listings.this is garaunteed.

    It depends what you sell.

If you sell products that people really want, or at reasonable prices, they'll pay you in what ever way you choose.

Ebay has done a good job convincing people that only possible way to get paid or pay is via paypal...

just to clear up the confusion lads, ebay insist you offer paypal as a method in many categories, but they cannot and do not insist on paypal being the only offered method.

if they did that, then thats where the monopolies and merger's comission would come into play.

Unfortunately ebay do have one category where ONLY paypal is allowed..consoles, the announcement was here:

    http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/200708101038232.html

PayPal will need to be the only payment method on sales in the following category:
    • Video Games: Consoles
Whilst I personally would not dream of paying by any other method at all, not even for a sub £5 item, I was and still am unhappy with the apparent move towards making paypal compulsory and stated that on the lengthy thread we had going about this when it was announced.

I prefer people to have choice as I don't believe in a nanny state system where we have to protect buyers from being foolish. On a more selfish note, in one of my categories I routinely out sell one of my competitors on a day by day basis as he does not take paypal, if he had to offer paypal my own profits would suffer. Hey, who said I have to be nice all the time?

Ebay aren't really interested in preventing fraud, if they were they would put in procedures to make Ebay a safer place to trade, but it would cost them money and after all that's what they are about. The onyl reason for forcing Paypal on people is to increase their profit margin.
  • You get a one sided story reading forums. If something goes wrong people rant but if all runs smoothly nothing is mentioned. I have been accepting paypal for years turning over many thousands of pounds with absolutely no problems whatsoever. The problems I do have are are of the cheque in the post type or missing postal orders. Yes the charges are high but so are bank charges and card terminals. Unless we all go back to cash and keep it under the mattress we must accept this. As a buyer I would only pay by paypal or cash on collection.

Indeed you do only hear one side, that's true of all forums, the issue is that things do go wrong and the sign of a good company is how they deal with these issues. I'm not too sure that "you'll have to wait 6 months or for some letter to arrive from the USA" would be classified as dealing wit the issue in a customer orientated way.
  • I have taken into account the many successful transactions I've had through paypal, but lets face it we've paid for them! If it was a good value service I'd be thinking differently but it's expensive and poor customer service.

Recently I've sold a lot of DVD's. As the paypal pricing structure is a standard fee PLUS a percentage if you sell something for just £1 paypal take about 25% in fees. (20p + 3.5%).

For example I recently sold an xbox game, which including postage was £3.40. After ebay and paypal take their bites, plus postage of course, the net price was less than £1 for the game. In future I'll take stuff like that to the car boot sale where even if I only get £1 it's without hassle.
