Bought a set of magnetic L plates for my partner who is learning to drive, but was shocked at what the lady who served me at Halfords said.
She told me always remember magnetic L plates limit the car to 50 mph, but I have never heard this before, but then when I read the packaging they came in it does state dont use them over 50 mph.
So is this a new rule? It certainly didnt exist when I was learning to drive in 1986.

Perhaps they lose their magnetism and fall off the car over 50mph?0 -
It's not "a rule" in terms of being a provisional driving licence restriction. A learner can drive at the same speeds as any other driver - and will fail a driving test for not driving to the speed limit, where it's appropriate.
But if you go above 50, the magnetic L plates may come detached...
It all depends where they're stuck. On the front, it's probably hard to get them anything like vertical, anyway.0 -
Seems silly why they make L plates that cant cope with speeds that exceed 50 mph. Is there any other way we can stick them on? I was worried tape or something might leave marks on the paintwork.0

Perhaps some cable ties through the radiator grill.0 -

Tape shouldn't damage your paint, assuming you aren't leaving them on there all the time.0 -
Cable ties good idea, but wanted something that can quickly and easily be removed and replaced. But thanks anyway.0

Just use them, if they blow off what have you lost, ok an L plate. But why buy something else until these fail.0

And if you get pulled or are unfortunate to be involved in an accident where the police are involved, you will be "driving otherwise than in accordance with your licence". Penalty is a fine and three points.0 -
We 'lost' one a couple of times when OH was learning. Always on the same stretch of road as well at 50-60mph. We could do 70mph on a different stretch of road and not have an issue.
Both times we saw said L plate blow off and pulled over in a layby to go retrieve it - but we also got a spare set to keep in the boot just in case.0
