Washing machine installed wrong

Hi all!
Hope you're all well!
Long time reader, first time poster!

I need some advice from you lovely people.

I recently purchased my first home and went about doing all the things adults do, (been living with mum and dad until now!) So I bought a washing machine, didn't have a clue how I'd do the plumbing so I paid the guys at Curry's and additional £25 to have it all sorted back in December.

I'd used the washing machine maybe twice before I officially moved so I knew it was working fine (only bedding and hand towels I'd used to clean). Over the weekend I put all my shirts and a few other bits in the wash and when it all came out it had shrunk, I realised that the hot pipe had been used instead of the cold to feed the washing machine 😅😅😅. Not cool, I called customer service, and they arranged for someone to be sent out today. The chap confirmed that the original team who had installed it had used the wrong pipe water feed.

I called the customer service number after he'd submitted his report and they told me it was a manufacturer issue and that I'd need to speak to Samsung regarding the faulty appliance... They also said if I wanted to complain I should do it via email but I'd have to submit receipts of all the damaged cloths if I wanted to make a claim, is this true? Should I have a sock draw full of old receipts?

Should I just be sending them an email outlining my grievance and asking them for a goodwill payment to replace some of my damaged property?

Thank you for any advice!
Have a lovely day

Omar

The appliance isn't faulty - it was installed incorrectly.

    You've been fobbed off.
  • Hi,

I thought all new machines were cold fill, on the blue connection?

Well, yes. That's why you shouldn't be connecting it up to the hot supply.

If you don't have the original receipts, you might try getting evidence of what it would cost to replace the garments like-for-like. Unfortunately Currys have a reputation for poor customer service so you will have an uphill struggle to obtain any compensation.

I'm surprised it worked. I assumed that if the temperature of the feed was already above the wash temperature it would throw up an error.

Your complaint is with Currys' installation team. It's them you should be chasing to fit it to the correct feed and for your consequential losses. How much are your clothes worth, roughly? Bear in mind that you can only claim for used or nearly-new replacements - you're not entitled to brand new replacements of everything or the equivalent monetary value. Make an approximate assessment, take photos of the damaged clothes and ask them for that amount.
  • Thanks for your replies guys,

I'd say absolute lowest estimate brand new is £200 in cloths, so I'd expect some goodwill towards that. 7 shirts and a track suit set

The unit is supposed to be cold water fed, I'm not sure if it will have sustained any damage but I can't imagine the hot water would have been good for it, I have a boiler which is emersion heated and the water is always extremely hot. But I have no means to quantify that.

I was surprised at the lack of bother from Curry's because I've spent an awful lot with them, litrally purchased everything for my apartment from them so far.

I'll write to them and see what happens

    Thanks again

How’s it a Samsung issue the installer connecting the cold inlet pipe to the hot water supply?
Either it’s the installers fault for connecting to the hot supply or the water valve has a cold indicator on it by mistake, or it’s an old single water supply that was used for a dishwasher, some people plumbed them hot
In all these cases it’s either the installers fault or not there fault if the plumbing is marked wrong or plumbing is wrong

So the bloke came out and made a report but didn't actually connect the right feed for you? This would take about a minute.
He then wrote a report stating the appliance was "faulty" and blamed the manufacturer?

Either that or not heat the water any further. Those type of redundancies are built into modern machines.

    This.
I'm wondering if this thread is genuine.

Most washing machines can go up to 90 degrees, so I can't imagine a bit of hot water is going to damage anything. Except for delicate clothes.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    This.

    I don't think it is.

I've moved house three times in the past 4 years, 2 of them were victorian terraces.

They all had a cold water pipe and a water disposal pipe to the washing machine.
