Having issues since switching suppliers

Hi everyone, I'm hoping for some help as I feel like I'm banging my head up against a brick wall. Sorry if this is long!
I got the keys to my new property the end of November, the property was supplied on a credit basis by Eon. I then switched to British gas in mid November. Both suppliers were given the meter readings from the day we got the keys and the day we switched.
I was sent an estimated bill for £171 by Eon and called them up to give them the readings. But they said that they had to get them from British gas.
I contacted British gas and asked them to send the readings and at the same time I requested to switch from a credit account to a pre payment meter and to have a smart meter fitted, which they said was fine and which is set to take place at the end of February.
I then received an updated bill from eon with the correct gas reading and a new bill for £100, as the electricity reading was still being estimated.
After speaking to Eon, they say that they have had the gas reading but not the electricity reading. And that if they don't receive the electricity reading within the next couple of weeks that their estimate would become final and we would have to pay it, despite her acknowledgement that the estimated bill is high and that the meter readings we have, show that our bill should be closer to £40.
So, I was back on the phone to British gas to ask them to send Eon the electricity meter reading. And according to them there is no reading to send as we have pre payment meters! We don't have pre payment meters and aren't due to have them fitted until the 26th of February.
I was on the phone for an hour going around in circles because they refuse to acknowledge that I currently have credit meters because for some reason they have changed the tarriff on my account to the pre payment one already, despite the meters not being fitted yet.
I'm not really sure where to go from here as it should be quite straight forward, but I'm not getting anywhere with British gas. And I was hoping someone here might have some advice

All you need to do is ensure the start reading used by BG is the same as the final one used by Eon. As long as it is, then you will not be paying twice for the same energy. i.e what you don't pay one supplier, you will need to pay the other.
It probably doesn't make much difference in the long run, and hence disputes under certain limits over what the meter reading was (as long as it's the same) are often not entertained.
If it's not the same meter reading used by both suppliers, get BG to change it once you get the bill from final bill from Eon.
If you are not on the tariff you applied for and is appropriate for your type of meter, follow the supplier's complaint procedure.0 -

Hello Bumblebee6 and welcome to the Forums.
With a change of supplier, the company taking over drives the switch. They're responsible for sending us their opening readings. We use the same readings to close our account and issue the final bill. The readings go through an industry third party who checks they're in line with past readings held for the property. Sometimes, the third party will make a change and both suppliers need to use the amended readings.
As Biscuit Tin says, it's important our closing readings match those used by BG to start their account. This makes sure the same energy is only charged once. I also agree with Biscuit Tin that if you pay us more/less, you'll pay BG less/more.
I don't agree with our advisor. Estimates can be changed when we receive agreed actual readings as above.
Sorry to lose you Bumblebee6.
