I'm going to Portugal for 5 days in February. I'm looking at hiring a car and the quotes I'm getting seem ridiculous. For example 5 days hire ford focus estate with collection from Lisbon airport, unlimited mileage. Full to full fuel policy, 2600 excess (I'd buy separate excess cover for about £10 here in the UK. The full price is.... £12
Surely that can't be right? This is on travelsupermarket
Thanks

Are you taking it back to the same location? It may be that cheap as its a "re positioning" hire, but if not, then I am stumped.0

These are fairly usual headline prices for this time of year. They will be extra keen to "boost' their revenue though from the less savvy customers so do be aware of that.0

I have seen prices quoted a lot less than that in Spain.
Be very careful who is actually supplying the car & be ready for the very very hard sell when you pick up the car.
If you have your own excess insurance they will be blocking maybe 1500 euro on your credit card so be aware.0 -
Very low season in Portugal in February so it probably is correct. As another poster says they'll be looking to bump up their takings by offering you extras.
As with any car hire, buyer beware, and research who it's with and any pitfalls etc. but be prepared for the following:
- A very hard sell on added insurance. They'll try and scare you into buying some extra package like insurance and breakdown/recovery etc. You say you'll get excess insurance here - and that's the correct thing to do. Just give a firm but polite "I am covered for that thank you so do not require your insurance". remember you'll have to leave a large deposit reserved on your credit card. A lot of companies will try and scare people by saying "We do not recognise your own policy" or "It is not valid with us". It's nonsense - excess insurance is between you and the provider of that and the car rental firm do not need to recognise it or declare it valid.
- Damages. There are some horror stories out there about companies charging people for damage - hairline scratches on alloys etc. Just make sure you thoroughly check the car on collection, photographs, video etc on your smartphone.
I searched a random 5 day hire from Lisbon in February, and got these prices on the companies own websites:
Avis: £18
Budget: £18
Alamo:£17
These are reputable brands so if they're advertising that price it will be legit. Local companies may be even cheaper - just research what they're like. Stay away from Goldcar though!
Enjoy your bargain rental!0 -

Thanks for that. Yes I've had the hard sell before. I've no issue with them blocking a deposit on my card. And I've no issue with them trying to sell me stuff and politely saying no thanks.
I will look on the ones you listed. Id rather pay a little extra for a company I've heard of.
Many thanks0 -
i paid £20 for a week in January last year - they made a half-arsed attempt to upgrade us as clearly only had the better car - but still only paid twenty quid.
Did get caught out on Lanzarote once on a pay fuel upfront. so only tip ensure its full to full. The futures bright the future is Ginger0
