If you have children it can be so useful to all eat together, even if its not every day. The time can be used to chat about ' stuff'. If you get into the habit, it can turn into a time where you find out things that they may never have mentioned... I.E. I know of a family where they established the child was bullied at school, but he would never ever have brought this up .... it was just a casual mention which led to the parents gently questioning.

Of course you're right about it being good for children but I actually like talking to my DH.

I like my partner so eating at a table is a great opportunity to talk with each other.

When it's just the two of us we mostly eat on the sofa but do use the table once or twice a week but when we have company it's always at the table.

Do you not get that same opportunity on a sofa? I also like my partner and we use our mealtimes to have a good chat, no tv on (unless we are watching a film) and sometimes some music playing but still done on the sofa, I don't quite understand how adding a table to the mix would somehow improve things?

I could be wrong but I think you're unusual in not having the TV on while sitting on the sofa.

For me, eating at the table separates meal time from relaxing time and /or watching TV on the sofa. Plus it's meant to be better for digestion. :)

Same with us. Actually it's nice to sit at a table with no tv on in the background at least once a week.
  • I think its not having the tv on at meal times that makes the big difference to how we share meals

When Im cooking, the tv is on, I kinda keep half an eye on a soap. When we are eating the tv is turned to mute

Don't like not sitting at the table to eat. The table says its meal time

For me, as a twice a day table user, digestion is very important.
And that's a big reason why I'd never eat sat on the sofa.

I'm confused. Why do you not want to be reminded it's meal time?
