My wife had a letter from Barclaycard Fraud today. It transpires that there were dozens of small items all to Just Eat. All being refunded and new cards issued. Well done Barclaycard.

But how does the fraud work ? Somewhere this needs to be cash related doesn't it ?
Are you sure the letter really was from Barclaycard? Sounds like an updated version of the phone scam where the fraudsters claim to be Visa Secure and tell you your card has been used here, there and everywhere. Once you're suitably panicked they tell you to call the number on the back of your card. They keep the line open and when you think you've called the bank they then take you through 'security', probably logging into your account online at the same time with you unwittingly providing all the right answers.

That's now much more difficult because the phone network no longer allows the calling party to keep the line open after the called party has cleared down. So perhaps a letter looking like the real thing (but giving the fraudster's number) is the latest version? Did they ask you to return the old card or to confirm a request for a new card? Whatever you do, don't return the card or call any number in that letter, just contact Barclaycard using the number on your card or statement.

Have the alleged Just Eat transactions really shown up, or were they fake?
  • Just this week I have managed to keep the HSBC fraud department from scamming someone else by holding the nice Asian sounding lady on the phone for a while! I don't bank at HSBC! Simple thing, she wanted my name, and my card details. I gave false names!

Now OP I would get the wife to check this out to see if her email is compromised!

Also my bank now has an on my phone where I can ring them direct, so even if the visa fraud department ring again, I have my app to verify!

Just eat is a very common fraud on cards.
    Fraudsters have to eat....
Basically card details entered into app and off they go.
While bank gets money back from Just eat. No one seems to know if they report to police the fraud account details.
As has been said this should have a traceable address. But just like fraudsters taking out insurance & booking holidays & flights....
All traceable. But they still do it.

Although odd that you got a letter on this and the card had been stopped and replace without it being confirmed as fraud.
I would ring Barclaycard on a known number to check.... NOT anything off the letter.
    Life in the slow lane

My wife downloaded the statement and then rang Barclaycard - using the number on the card - all these transactions were small - £10 -£15 and 40 on one day.

Ben8282 - how often do you check your Barclaycard statement ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Yes, lets not help people from being a victim of fraud, let's keep it a secret so it can keep happening :T

    I'm glad you agree.

Do you not see that 2 contradicts 1?

This really is very odd though as it is difficult to understand what a fraudster could have done with 40 separate take-aways on one day. 40 different purchases of goods from retail shops would make sense but 40 take-aways?
