My parents have bought a fiesta for the last 4 decades, each one they have kept for 10 years before trading in for a new one!

Can’t remember them having any problems!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Older Volvos can also reach starship mileages if well maintained, especially D5 engines.

X2 as the above. D5 engine in the S60 saloon or V70 estate (Volvo).
This is my fourth V70......only changed to upgrade. Fantastic powerful engine good on fuel.

Everybody can name their preferred car to their heart's content. It doesn't affect the correct answer - which is "Whatever you maintain properly".

Somebody unsympathetic and with a negligent attitude to maintenance can kill any car within a couple of years.
Somebody who bothers to maintain properly can get a lifetime of use out of any car.

If you're starting off with a 2yo, 20k mile car, then in 10 years and 120k, it's only going to be 12yo and 140k. That's not exactly exceptional, is it?

The average car in the UK is just under 14yo at scrapping, and working from average annual mileages, would have about 110k on it. Remember, that mean is weighted by all the cars that are written off far earlier than that, too, so the mode and median will both be higher.
  • The key characteristic is that it should be a Skoda Octavia...

Or a diesel Rapid if you want to try and spend less than 10k. Still a good car and the spaceback has a cracking boot, as big as some estates. I put nearly 90,000 miles on one in 2 years and it never let me down, I still miss that car!

    do these cars never rust?

I can't remember the last time I saw a car which was first manufactured after the turn the century with rust.

    Do cars rust anymore?

I saw some utterly awful vans and pickups at an auction yesterday morning.

Yes, definitely. Not as badly as they did, sure, but they do. Many cars have a particular favourite spot as they get older.

Just to pick one example - mk2 (2004-2011) Focuses are starting to get quite the reputation...

Yes had a mk2 Focus, bought for banger money, but both front wings had separated from the chassis due to rust......car was 2006.
