Username mess

I made an error of judgement and was persuaded by the imminent platform switch advice that I needed to register a new email address for my frequently used principal username.
That apparently can't work as the email address I used is linked to a previous long forgotten username inactive for a few years.
I have tried to revive my preferred username but it's being rejected - I think it was hotmail email, now no longer in service.
Forum help are on the case - but I wondered if there is something "obvious" that I have missed ?
Has anybody had a similar problem ?
