In this situation I would keep my eyes out for something cheap and with the ability to improve/refurbish.. I appreciate that it's a bit like finding a needle in a haystack but it sometimes you do look at the same property on rightmove a hundred times and suddenly decide it's the one. A few years on from purchasing a extensive-to-moderate do-er upper, after you've done the renovations and made it somewhere you'd want to live in you might well decide it's in a great shape to sell. That extra cash plus the extra you'll have saved might be a really helpful boost to your savings for the next property. I say this as someone who was only able to afford refurbish my one bedroom flat to my tastes two years after buying it. Now I've just bought another (using funds from remortgaging the first) - this time with two bedrooms, private garden and entrance. It's also in need of LOTS of TLC. But when it's done it's gonna be more-or-less a dream home. This whole process started in 2014. I expect the refurbishment of the 'dream home' flat to be done beginning 2021. Effectively I'm upgrading one refurbishment at a time.
It takes time but I think it's worth it.0
