Hi Eyebright
Wow you are doing great, fantastic news about the tax rebate that is a great boost for your EF. You will be making overpayments on that loan in now time at this rate!
So sorry to hear about your friends loss that's very sad, I'm sure her just knowing you are there for her and care is enough.
I noticed the £1 listings on eBay too and have listed a few bits, fingers crossed for both our sales.
Thanks Poppy, I'm so pleased about the tax rebate, as it will be a big chunk to put towards to the EF, and then I can cancel the credit cards once we have a cushion in place.
It's so difficult to know what to do or say when someone is grieving. I know her husband has been amazing and is supporting her through this. I've said if she needs anything to just let me know, hopefully she realises I mean it.
Fingers crossed for our eBay sales! I've decided that the profit after selling fees and postage etc for this first lot will go towards the birthday gifts I need for March. Until all my saving pots are in place, extra cash will go to things I haven't planned for in advance, to ensure I don't have to put anything else on the credit cards, like old me would have done! I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by throwing everything at the loan and leaving myself short in the budget.
It's strange as it feels like I'm not making any progress, but actually learning to budget properly and look ahead to plan what money I'll need is actually a really important part of this process, and something I wasn't getting right before and contributed to the mess I'm in now!:rotfl:

Awww I'm sure she will know you mean it and it will be a comfort to her.
That's a good idea about your ebay profit, once you have those saving pots built up you will feel much more in control for sure. Although I am on a much stricter budget and things feel awfully tight sometimes it feels like I actually have more money than I did before I was following a strict budget because that money used to get frittered away on non stuff (like a cuppa or sandwich at work) also because I constantly lived in my overdraft it always felt like I never had any money because I was just spending the banks or using the credit cards. Whereas now because my budget it so strict and every penny is accounted for it feels more controlled and I do feel far better than when I was constantly robbing Peter to pay Paul etc. So yes learning to budget properly is the key to getting debt free for sure. I can't wait to be debt free as I now feel budgeting is so engrained in me that when my loan is paid off and I have that £456 monthly payment no longer going to my loan im going to feel rich! lol

Awesome result with the rebate!
I know exactly what you mean about the budgeting! I am finding it more difficult than actually saving money, if that even makes sense. I am looking forward to being like Poppy and having it ingrained in me. Practice makes perfect...or Perfect practice makes perfect as my Grandpa always tells me :rotfl:
Thanks for popping in Frank, it's nice to have the encouragement from people on the boards, and hopefully to help nudge me in the right direction when I lose the plot!
You're grandpa sounds like a wise man!:D:D
So today has been a NSD as planned. Didn't manage to get anything on Prolific today, probably not that surprising as the only time I had to check was in my 30 minute lunch break. Didn't have much desk time today as it was super busy. Day off tomorrow though, so hoping to get at least one in tomorrow.
Plan for tomorrow is to go to the library in the morning with LO, as have books that are nearly due, she likes playing in there too, especially if the weather is cold like it has been today. Then in the afternoon have housework to catch up on and a sympathy card to make. Will no doubt play around with my budget more!:rotfl:
Will post it on there once I'm settled on my plan.
Have checked my bank account, there's £5.19 in there, and nothing else due out. Also have a fiver plus some shrapnel in my purse. I'll potentially need £4 of that on Wednesday if I have to work late and OH can't pick me up on his way home from work and I have to get the bus.
I would quite like that £5.19 to still be in my bank account on Friday when I get paid! Then I need to grab a little something for LO's friend whose birthday party she is going to on Saturday. Am thinking I'll get them a little book for hopefully no more than a few pounds. Have plenty of wrapping paper in the loft and have already made the card. Just need to make a tag at some point this week.
I've also sorted out some on LO's coats that are too small for her now. As the weather has suddenly turned cold I'm thinking now might be a good time to try and sell them on a couple of FB selling groups I'm in.
Uggh getting late and I'm shattered. Off to bed I go!

Mixed day today. LO has given me her head cold, and I'm feeling awful. We also ran out of cat food, so when we went to the library I also had to buy her some food to last until the online food shop gets delivered tomorrow night. Also managed to get a present for the birthday party we're going to at the weekend, main slip up was LO talked me into letting her have a ball as well, and I bought some crisps I thought OH would like even though we have crisps ordered on the food shop...:o
Total: £5. Which was the fiver in my purse, so if I do need to get the bus tomorrow it will come from the £5 in my bank account which I didn't want to touch.
However I've sorted out some coats to list on FB selling group that don't fit LO anymore, so the goal is to earn back the money I spent today.
I did put back something for myself I had picked up as it would have brought the total to £6 which I would have had to put on the debit card and gone back into my O/D, so although I feel like I have failed, perhaps it wasn't a total failure...
The better news was some of the tax rebate has hit my account, I was able to get £139.99 of it that was from this last tax year deposited directly into my bank. The remainder is being sent as a cheque that I'll pay in. I now officially have an EF. It's not a big one yet, but it has started. I also got £5.62 cashback from my Santander 123 lite account, which I have also rolled into my EF.
The EF now stands at: £145/500
Inching closer to payday, I'm hoping my payslip will be available to view on the computer when I get into work tomorrow. Then I can really set my budget ahead of being paid on Friday.

We currently have a joint account, the Santander 123 lite account, that all the house DD's go out of to pay the bills. I also have a separate bank account that I move all my budgeted money into for my personal spending.
I've seen that I could get £100 if I set up a bank account with First Direct. My wages are paid into the Santander 123 as it has to have money paid into it via wages, but could I open a First Direct and then set up a SO to move the money into it when I get paid, then move the money needed for bills back to the Santander 123? Would that fulfill the criteria for First Direct to have a minimum amount paid into it each month?

I think to get the £100 you have to actually move a bank account to them ie your personal spend one, which will then be closed down.
I have accounts with Santander and others, that I use Standing orders for to put money in to fulfil their criteria, I then have standing orders for the next day, that move it back to the account it's just come from, no problem.
I Believe.....
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.

Thanks for your reply Chrystal, yes I did mean I would close the personal account with Santander and use the First Direct one instead of that for my personal spends. I just wanted to make sure that I could use a SO from the 123 Lite account where my wages get paid into, to move money into the First Direct account and then back again! You sound very savvy with all your accounts you move your money around in!:D:D

HI - just wanted to say it was a typo when I said I would worry about your credit score - I actually meant not to worry right now... Oops. MSE credit club is a good one to watch monthly - apart from anything else you can check for fraud.
Great news that your EF is off to a flying start. I can relate that it doesn't feel that satisfying when you are first learning to budget and can't make big OPs yet - but it will come. You are still doing something productive. I've paid off debt at unsustainable rates in the past and it just causes other problems...
I tried to do a 'switch' to HSBC and they wanted to switch both mine and DH's salary and close the accounts - so I cancelled it. I did however meet criteria for other banks that had rewards or extra interest without doing a full switch but didn't get a big payout. i wasn't willing to close my bank accounts that I've had since 1991!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Well you did make me check my credit score anyway, which I have been avoiding doing because I was scared it would be terrible! It's "fair" and 860ish, so it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that I consolidated onto the loan though, so it might perk up a bit in a few months. I would like to improve my score this year, as our fixed rate mortgage is due for renewal next year, and the mortgage advisor usually starts contacting us around Feb time to get the next mortgage set up. I would like to be in a better position by then, so that we have the best chances with the best rates etc, and get accepted for the product we want.
Hmmm, definitely still want to keep our JA for the bills, just want to move my personal bank account. If I have to move and close the JA then I won't bother. I'm only really thinking about it so that I could get the £100 for it, as that will again help fill up my pots. The sooner they are complete the sooner I can make overpayments! I've had my personal bank account since I was 16, and have been with Santander since it was Abbey National :rotfl:
It's funny that I have no loyalty with insurances and energy suppliers, and always ditch and switch to get a better deal, yet seem reluctant to do so with my bank. Very odd indeed!
Work today, still full of cold. Wasn't productive at all yesterday, lots that still needs doing at home. See how I feel when I get home tonight. Hopefully I can get some bits done. Food shop is coming tonight, came in at £69, which might seem a lot, but for me is pretty good! I usually spend around £80 a week. This does include cleaning products, cat food/litter etc as well.
Moving forward I'll try and track them separately in my budget, and maybe buy in bulk at the start of the month etc. Then I can concentrate on getting my food spends down.
Right must dash, need to finish getting ready for work and get LO up. Have a good day all.
