When should I apply to change provider?

I am with the post office for broadband on a 12 month contract that ends on the 25th Jan. I want to change provider as the PO wants an additional £10 /month from that date.
When should I apply to a new provider as I can't leave early as there is a termination fee. Or will the new provider check existing contract details?

Many posts about this, 10-14 days before the end of the minimum term, if you intend to migrate to another company that also uses Openreach ‘network’ , so generally that’s everyone apart from VM....not much
point stressing about trying to get the exact anniversary, a few days before the date or a few days after won’t make much difference, you don’t advise the PO, you let the new company deal with that, the new company won’t check anything, like existing contract dates ( they cannot do that anyway) they simply sign you up and the common ordering ‘system’ advises your old company that you are leaving0
