Updating email for move can anyone help

Hi I am hoping someone can advise me.
Every time I try to confirm my email in the link given to prepare for the move, there is a very old email already on the form. When I change it to my present email and the one I have logged in on for the last five years,to update it I get a message saying this email is already in use.
Today I got my email to my present email but with an old user name on it ( I had a break when my husband died and forgot my details) I don’t have access to the old email nor do I use the old user name and havent for five years . I do get emails in my present email adress but the email I got today has an older users name on it.
If I am getting emails to the right account does it matter that the form has an old address on it? Will I get locked out when the move happens ? Is there anything I need to do.
I hope this makes sense I am a bit confused by it all TBH.
Thanks for reading

Sounds like you have 2 completely separate accounts?
Old email address paired with username pinkfairy27
Present email address paired with your old username
.....in which case you could log in using your old username and password and close that account completely (or just change the email registered to that username to another one if you have a third email address and want to keep access to your old MSE username), before then logging in using your current username (pinkfairy27) and password and it should then allow you to change your registered (old) email address to your present email address under your account settings (the form where the link takes you to in their email that you mentioned) as it would then no longer be in use on the other account, which is why you're getting the message saying it's already in use.
I think that's how it should work? At least that's how it works for me.........but I'm not sure as you said you currently log in to pinkfairy27 using your present email address......what do you mean by that? When I log in it asks me for my username (2013yearofthehouse) and password, so I'm not using my email to log in at all (it's just listed under my account once I'm logged in). How are you logging in? Are you inputting your username as pinkfairy27 or are you inputting your email address as the username (because I didn't think that would work?)? I think I used to use my email address to log in to the forums (as I have it listed like that under my saved logins), but not anymore. To double check, I just logged out to try it and it won't let me log in with my email address, it only works with my username, so I guess they changed it at some point.
Essentially, the MSE email says the first time you log in to the new forum you'll need to use your email address to log in and reset the password. However, currently logging in requires your username and password (not your email address?), so it sounds like currently, if you tried to log in and reset your password on the new forum, then by entering your present email address it will reset the password (and then log you in) to your old username.
If you're currently logging in by writing pinkfairy27 and your password on the log in form and the email address listed under the account settings is your old email address, then it sounds like your pinkfairy27 account is not linked to your present email address at all and needs to be updated (which is probably only possible once you remove it from being registered to your old username).
Unless you somehow have 2 usernames registered to one email and 1 username registered to 2 emails?
I'm not sure I've explained that very well, sorry!
Basically, if the 2 accounts are completely separate then it should be easy to fix, but if not then I'm not sure!0 -
