I wasn't counting "surrender" as a solution. Leaving him a life interest in the house is the opposite of what she wants to achieve.

From the perspective of the sons, a life interest to the husband is not that far removed from just leaving him the share of the house. In theory it could be a smoking hole in the ground by the time they inherit. It may be unlikely but as they've no way of knowing when and what they'll inherit, it's safest to assume it will be.

If she left everything to the sons and the husband made a successful I(PFD)A claim, the judge might just award him a life interest anyway.

The house was bought 60 years ago by both of them.

It's likely that the property isn't registered at the LR as it was bought so long ago.

Does the aunt know where the house deeds are being kept?
