I don't think I should actually name the establishments that give me these receipts. Among them are 2 cafe's in Ferndown, Dorset and a cafe attached to a garden centre in Parley, Dorset. I will use chip and pin in these establishments in future. Incidentally I keep all my cards in an aluminium wallet to avoid accidental or fraudulent scanning.

As far as asking for a receipt is concerned then I always ask for one as its sensible to keep track of spending and in case of faulty goods etc

Yeah but that is not going to help as they are giving you their recipt not the one meant for the customer.

This is a staff training issue and unless you raise it, it will not stop (and even then who knows).

It has occured to me before at places with overworked flustered staff.

But with your aluminium wallet I think you will just buy in to the inobviosuly crazy answers ;-) (it is OTT to anyone knowing how the system works).

If your purchases are going to be allowable expenses of some form - either as business expenses or perhaps as committee expenses, to be later reclaimed or set against tax then a printed receipt from the contactless transaction showing the purchase details is essential.

Surely you need a till receipt for this, not a card receipt from the contactless device? (Same for the MSE’er needing receipts in casebof faulty goods)

Most of the time these days you get a 'combined' receipt from the till, showing VAT and card data.

Interestingly, you can keep these as proof of purchase but if you ever need to use them for that purpose after more than a few months, they will have faded to completely blank!

Surely that's typically the case only for medium/large merchants with card payment handling capabilities built directly into integrated EPOS systems rather than smaller ones like the cafes OP refers to, where the card payment facilities will usually be standalone PDQ-style terminals generating separate receipts relating only to the card transaction?

This conjures up the image of complaining about full PANs being printed on receipts, only to be told that they'll become fully secure in a few months time!

The reason you get a full number receipt is because the system is not set up to automatically issue a customer receipt - it can be done during machine set up - and getting a reprint of the merchant copy with a single button press is easier and quicker than the multi press option to get a customer receipt. Purely a staff training issue.

I didn't think you could get receipts with contactless? I think you might have been given ther merchants copy. I work in a restaurant where the merchant receipt contains more details than the customer copy, including the number. They shouldn't be giving the merchant receipt out.

You get a receipt with contactless in exactly the same way as if you had put your card into the machine and input your pin. Which is to say, it depends on how the system is set up.
