I have had a smart meter fitted in February by Eon, with an IHD showing usage, it has not stopped working after just a couple of weeks! The display is showing 'waiting for current data'. We rang Eon and they said its a new issue that's only been happening for a couple of weeks and they have no known date to fix the software 'glitch'.
It's a Chameleon display unit.  Has anyone else had this issue previous to February, as my argument with them is tgat they have been badgering us to change to a smart meter for months, which I finally agreed to as I thought it would be useful to see the usage and make us more 'aware' of not wasting electricity, but they did not disclose that there is a known issue with the display readings being shown on the IHD's?
Hello Ransme and welcome to the Forums.
This issue is different to the one I've just commented on above. The problem here is with the In Home Display (IHD) and is limited to a small proportion of SMETS2 customers. Much of the problem is down to network issues over which we've little control. We're working with industry partners like the communication provider, IHD manufacturer and the network operator to fix this. I don't have a timeframe at this point.
Totally understand the frustration this causes and we're looking to sort a fix that can be done remotely. To allow any messages to be picked up, please leave the IHD plugged in.
In the meantime, please try placing the IHD nearer the electricity meter, make sure there are no obstructions blocking the signal and reset the IHD. This has sometimes worked although not always.
Whilst annoying, this issue won't affect the ability of the meters to send us readings automatically so your bills can be kept accurate.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience Ransme and thanks for your patience.

  • I don't know if anyone here can answer my question but I'd be interested as to who is responsible for the cost of a replacement IHD when it reaches end of life? My old Eon one has developed a fault (it keeps changing modes randomly) and I use it a lot since I have solar panels and it gives me an idea when is the best time to use electrical items to best effect. As consumers I think that it should be the suppliers responsiblity to replace old ones when they are reaching end of life. They seem very reluctant to answer my question. I'll be knocking on doors and generally making a noise at Smart Energy GB if I can get their email address. Another company hiding behind closed doors.

You are. The suppliers are only on the hook for the first 12 months according to Ofgem. If you talk to your supplier, they may replace it as a gesture of goodwill but they are under no obligation to do so. Alternatively, you can purchase another IHD from a Registered DCC User such as Hildebrand.

Surely the best time is determined solely by the monitor which tells you the wattage your inverter is putting out?
