Balance transfer gone wrong

I recently attempted to make a balance transfer from my BAPP Amex card to my IHG creation card of £827.42. As Amex's 15 digit card number causes issues with other companies' systems I gave Creation the account number and sort code for Amex (given to me a few months ago by a CSA) On 27/12/19 the balance was credited to my Creation account. The money had not yet come off my Amex so I contacted their customer service department earlier this morning. American Express no longer allow balance transfers to other credit card companies and from their end no transfer was attempted by Creation. The CSA thought that the money would bounce back from Creation but advised me to contact them. I explained the situation to a Creation CSA - I was told that it is possible the £827.42 will come off my account automatically by 13/01 but if not to phone them on the 13th and they would take it from there.

My question is - is it likely it will be (relatively) straightforward to have the money debited from my Creation account.

Cheers,

Michael

  • If it needs returning then Creation will bounce it back.

Thanks Gary, I appreciate that. I hope that's the case. Creation customer service gets a bad rep but I've only ever had positive dealings with them - I hope that continues with getting the money back.
  • Also I don't recall ever receiving communications from Amex saying they no longer allow BT's?

I know there are only a few lenders that do accept BT's from Amex

That's a shame, I have a large balance on my AMEX card that I wanted to shift to one of my new interest free BT cards.
  • That was my thought too. I successfully completed a couple of balance transfers from Amex to a Tesco Bank credit card a few months ago. Again using the account number / sort code Amex gave - both times the BT went through without issue. Either they slipped through the net or Amex have only just very recently changed their terms and not communicated that to account holders.

Or you were given false info.

As much as Amex's Customer Service is great, sometimes they do slip up and tell some boo-boo's

A definite possibility. I've read lots of stories on Headforpoints about people receiving conflicting information from Amex Customer Service.

    Does not make sense...
If you have a DEBIT balance on your Amex & move it to your creation account.
You will not have the balance CREDITED to your Creation account. It will be DEBITED & will be CREDITED to your Amex account.

Or are you saying that you have a balance on the Creation card you want to move to Amex?

  • Apologies, you’re absolutely right - I put that down to the first day back at work and a rather scrambled brain. Debited and credited mixed up.

If Amex are saying that you can not do a balance transfer to another card. Then I would raise a complaint.

Yes we see issues with not being able to do balance transfers due to how some card providers systems work.
But for a them to say you can't.
Needs to be looked at by FOS.
