A big cause for argument but the general consensus is that new tyres should be fitted to the rear irrespective of drive. https://www.oponeo.co.uk/blog/better-tyres-in-the-front-or-rear-test-results

Its an interesting one, having been bought up on RWD a wayward rear end does not worry me overly but the steering wheels going wayward I find most discerning.

I took "six months left" as referring to the cracking - but until what? Until the cords were visible? Until they failed completely?
  • Hi guys,

Thanks for the input! The newy's are being fitted tomorrow.

When I asked after the MOT (national chain) how bad the tyres were, I was told by the garage manager that they probably wouldn't make another MOT, which is why I went round to my trusted, local tyre centre half an hour later. They gave them a good going over and couldn't see much wrong with them; loads of tread etc., just a couple, and only a couple, hairline cracks in the walls. You have to really get up close to see them - and I have good eyes.

About 6 months was advised, so here we are - a little bit early. I would never take a chance on brakes or tyres; "they're all that's between you and the road", as my Dad would say :)

So in other words both the MOT centre and the tyre fitters agree, the tyres wouldn't last until your next MOT.

Arm yourself with nothing more than a 20p piece, and inspect them yourself then, instead of entrusting the job to... people who want to sell you tyres!

Fully agree, for tread, but my old tyres were 'perishing'. In my case it was cracks in the walls...
