2x new tyres - rear wheel drive vehicle

Options
Hi guys,

As above, just about to have 2x new tyres fitted at my local fitting centre, an advisory on my September MOT. Well, it actually said the tyres were 'perishing' but I took the car straight round to the fitting centre and they laughed, said they have about 6 months left on them - so here I am, I couple of months early. I got a good price on Black Friday for a pair of Dunlops :D

So, on a rwd car, do I get the old rear wheels/tyres moved to the front and the new tyres/wheels moved to the back - I'm sure that's what been advised in the past? - I'm asking because this is a new tyre centre I'm using and I don't want to look like a berk...

Thanks.

A big cause for argument but the general consensus is that new tyres should be fitted to the rear irrespective of drive. https://www.oponeo.co.uk/blog/better-tyres-in-the-front-or-rear-test-results

Not all cars have the same size tyres front to rear. Mine being an example.

Front and rear tyres are different sizes on my Lexus so no swapping from rear to front when when the front ones wear out. Will that spell disaster? Better check with HJ.

It's a heck of a lot of verbiage just to say that the simple generalisation is that understeer is easier than oversteer for Joe Average.

What car is it, bearing in mind a lot of RWD cars can have different size tyres on the rear to the front.

Also, does it really take an MOT to tell you it's time to change your tyres ;)

Well, it wasn't a tread related warning and the tyre specialist disagreed with the tester's subjective opinion so I think we may be able to give the OP the benefit of the doubt this time. ;)

    Hmm...

The tester advised they were "perishing", and the tyre place said "you've got six months left on those"...

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement of their condition, is it? And, yes, perished and/or cracking sidewalls really should be noticed by somebody checking their tyres regularly...!

Must be the time of year for testers picking up perished, cracked tyres...

When a tyre fitter says you've got "around" 6 months left on them then you can be fairly sure they're not far off the minimum tread depth. My guess they're probably not far over 2mm.

I had a tyre fitter describe two tyres as bald that all had over 4mm on them !!!
