hi all,

looking to move into first house soon

just wondering what does everyone typically spend per month on bills - mortgage, food, utilities etc?

how do you deal with these with your partner? do you split in half and then transfer that amount into joint account on pay-day?

thanks

  • Mortgage, gas, electric, water, council tax, broadband, house insurance, mobile phone, life insurance, car insurance, pet insurance, tv licence, Netflix, Spotify, savings account for child.
I pay all my bills on my own and they come to around 800 per month.
Shopping and petrol on top of that. My shopping is around 80 a week for my daughter and I and I can never seem to get below 70 per week no matter how hard I try.

Mortgage varies between lenders, Apr, and how much you borrow - use a mortgage calculator for the appropriate figure.

    Gas - £16 pm, 2 bed flat

    Electric - £7 PW

Water - look up the local water authority and see what it is, unless your place is on a meter?

Council tax - look up your local council and see what the council tax is per year, divide by 12 that's your monthly payment, again this varies council to council.

Home insurance - you should be doing comparisons so you know, again this varies, could be £10pm, could be £50pm, it's down to the property, rebuild costs and contents insured for.

TV licence - this is £30 or £40 something pm to start if doing by installments, again check the TV licencing website.

internet - starts from about £20pm, depending on what speed you want and what's available in your area, use a comparison site to see what's about.

Sky/ others - varies based on what takes your interest.

    Netflix / others - from about £8 a month.

Food - £100, but im frugal with my spending.

Car insurance - may go up / down, depending on where you live.

Car tax - look on the DVLA website.

Emergency cover / breakdown cover for gas etc - varies between companies.

Emergency fund - a few thousand

Have you not already discussed how things are being paid between you?

You could agree one pays gas / elec / water, the other pays council tax, TV, or just split down the middle.

You will be joint and severally liable for bills in both names, if one doesn't pay, the company can go after either or both.

I'm guessing it depend on what sort of relationship you have with your partner.

Some stuff I pay, some stuff she pays and as my pension pension is nearly three times what she gets as a pension I also hand over a chunk of it as housekeeping money (although she spends it as she wants).

We have separate joint bank accounts so what's hers is hers and whats mine is hers :)

We've been married for over 50 years and it's worked for us when we both worked and for the few years when she wasn't but bringing up the kids.

Others do it differently, so it's what both of you feel comfortable doing.

Our bills will be everso different to yours, so there's not much point in comparing them

    thanks all,

we've been together a long time, always have split things down the middle except for treating each other etc (more her insisting).

i will be earning substantially more than her due to differing careers so i suspect we'd contribute to all bills potentially 60/40

We have all of our wages paid into the same account. I get paid monthly the OH gets paid weekly.

Essentially my money pays the mortgage and Bill's and the OHs money is pocket money.

That's how we work it we dont have mine and his money it is all our money.

No point talking about mortgage and bill payments as they vary so much per household so comparisons are irrelevant.

dd95 - why should your first house be any different from where you live now. Food, utilities etc will not vary much. Is the only new bit a mortgage ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

An hour a day, when it's really cold, I wrap up with blankets etc over putting the heating on, guess I'm old school because of growing up without GCH and DG, I'm also in Scotland :D
